Hi Maureen- this is a nice composition! It took me while to figure out that the pod on the right was actually another pod. It looks much different than the other two pods. I guess because the pods are integrated in to the other plant parts I am looking for a stem from the pod section.

@doug-milne Oh yes, good idea Doug! Great to hear from you

Beautiful composition! Do you know what kind of plant this is ?

Hi Douglass, I love that you are concentrating on leaves! And basil is one of my favorite leaves. (Admittedly more for the culinary potential than the artistic.) With your drawing here, this is a good start. I really see the folding nature of the leaves. But I want to see more darks and different colors, especially in the shadows. If you think of…[Read more]

Another sweet cherry tom! Beautiful toning and rich colors. Also, good work on the stem and sepals!

As with your other drawing, this one captures the lacy, spiky quality of the plant. And I see you have defined the center flower much better. Nice job! You could add some more in the darker value range on that front flower to really bring it forward. And add some cast shadows behind and under it.

Hi Sheila, Fascinating subject and so challenging with all those intricate parts. You have really captured that lacy, spiky feel of the plant. My main suggestion would be that I’d like to see a bit more of the structure of the main flower. I love the sketchiness of the drawing overall, but my eye is drawn to that center flower and I want a bit…[Read more]

Yes, the fly is a nice addition. I like how the wings subtly mimic the petals.

Your muted lavender and green is so evocative.

Thanks, Maureen, Clare, and Katy. And, Katy, I’ll see what I can do from your helpful suggestions.

Hi Douglass- this is a nice back view of a leaf. There are a couple of areas I would revisit. Usually the main vein will taper as it heads to the top of the leaf. Also, especially on the backs of leaves where the secondary veins connect to the main vein, that connection is very evident. Lastly, the light source on the leaf seems to be coming from…[Read more]

Thank you Katy and Doug for your insights. There are parts of this drawing I really like, particularly the fly and the lower right flower.

Sorry I haven’t been around. I took a break from drawing over the summer bc of a family crisis. Things have settled down, and I painted a happy yellow flower that grows in my garden 🙂
Really lovely, Pam.
Hi Pam- it is nice to see your work again!!!! This is beautifully rendered and I love the curve of the stem. Your toning is amazing! You have toned the seed head to give it form and the dark toning where the seed head meets the petals really illustrates how the seed head sits above the petals and it has a lot of presence!!!! Welcome back!!!
Lovely!
thanks everyone!
Pam, the yellows, those gorgeous petals, the center… a very beautiful complete drawing!
