Hi Karen- nice job on this leaf! Good rich mix of greens! Some veins are minimal, but I would look at your leaf again to see if the veins are accurate. Usually the main vein starts wider at the base and tapers as it goes up the leaf and the secondary veins often break up before reaching the edge of the page. I would lighten and smooth out the…[Read more]

Really lovely. So much detail in those little sandy puffs and the cast shadow is so soft.

This is a very large sand dollar that’s kind of shaped like a flower. I would appreciate any feedback! Thank you

So beautifully soft and sandy – the detail is exquisite.

Wonderful Jill!!! The toning is great and allows you see and appreciate every detail! Love the cast shadow too!

Jill, I love this. I’d love to pick it up. This was my favorite “shell” (not sure how you say it). I lived on Ocracoke Island several summers and picked up so many of these. Your gorgeous drawing takes me right back the those wide, empty of people beaches that had treasures like you draw!

Thanks again Doug! I think I will call this one done. It was Sam’s idea to add another falling petal!
My poppies are still going, I had never had so many. -

Thanks, Doug! Really helpful feedback. I only noticed the branch was floating after seeing it on the Art Feed. I will try to add a branch and am now struggling to add a rose to the lower right corner. Gosh, they are complicated!

Wow, continues to be so hard to draw and color real flowers! But fun. I’m having a lot of trouble blending colors to look smooth and delicate on the petals.

Hi Clotilde- nice job on this lily! The colors are really nice! It is currently a little hard to read because the petals and stamens are the same color. The highlight on the curled petal on the right is really good! It took me a while to see that was a curled petal and adding more dark toning on the underside of the curl would help it read better.…[Read more]

Thank you Doug, I will make all of those adjustments.

Thank you! It was fun to experiment with a different paper and nice to see how layers of colored pencils could react to a grainier surface.

Thank you so much for your critiques. I have a hard time with this veining indeed, and I have the same issue in another drawing of nasturtium (in progress). The veining is quite crisp and the leaves are very flat. I agree my rendering isn’t very convincing. I will work more on the veining and toning 🙂

Lovely. I will be using this as a reference for beautiful leaves.
-
Thank you Julie! It was interesting because the backs of the leaves were as exposed almost as much as the fronts.
-
Doug, what a wonderful drawing, the fruit, the leaves, the composition. It’s elegant!! And, a fantastic teaching study for all of us students. Thanks for posting it.
-
Thanks Sheila! I fudged in 4 of the fruits to help with the composition. It was a little bare with just one fruit.

I like this so much. The leaves, the flowers and the way you used the paper from edge to edge!
-
So pretty. I’m digging the flower stems attaching to the vine.
-
As a beginner this looks like a difficult composition. Very impressed with all those stems being clustered yet each one is distinct.
-
Thank you! There are certain plants I end up drawing repeatedly and the trumpet vine is one of them. Each part is unique and fun to draw!!!

Hi Doug, Any tips for even layers of toning? Less pressure, smaller areas at one time? I don’t know what or how to modify to get a different result. Thanks so much for your help.

Hi Kathy, thank you for the feedback. No, I was using the same paper but the new camera. Or, maybe it is my toning. The petals have veining, I tried to show them. I will keep working on my leaves too!

Struggling with the rose and composition… Should I add a couple of leaves behind the rose? Are the dark areas too dark?
Hi Renata- adding the stem to the middle leaf cluster helped a lot! I don’t think the dark areas are too dark and I would actually add more dark to the flower to help differentiate some of the petals. I liked the simplicity of the drawing before you added the flower at the bottom. That throws the composition off to me. On the left side you could a…[Read more]
Thanks for the helpful feedback, Doug! I will rework this and share asap (being really slow lately!).
