Back to the acorn. My fridge is full of specimens. So many plants to draw…so little time. Haha

Will try some green or blue on white flowers. These were so starkly white it was hard to get the feeling!

Thank you Doug. I watched the leaf video after doing this one, and hopefully the oak leaf drawing is better. Still hard to do subtle veining!

Three Japanese maple leaves – They are from the garden of our son’s home in North Carolina. It was going to be a quick trip, but turned into a 1.5 months stay because my husband had to have a surgery. Finding time on my hand, I ordered a starter kit from Drawbotanical. I am happy to report that the kit had everything I needed to draw these three…[Read more]

Hi Machi, this is a lovely study of leaves. Lovely and lively! I like the way you have tucked the seed pods in behind the leaves. A very effective composition.
-
Another beautifully done study of leaves! I like your subtle pillowing of the space between the leaves. And the complimentary colors of red and green give the drawing a real pop!
-
So sorry to hear about your husband. I hope he is recovering well. And glad you had the materials to produce these lovely drawings. Such a perfect way to use your time!

So graceful Elizabeth! It is beautifully rendered! I would add a hair bit more dark toning on the flower so it will hold it’s own against the dark leaves.

Nice page Karen! It is good practice to draw various bits of Nature that we find around us! The branch segment looks really good – nice toning!!!

Beautiful leaf Karen! Keep working on the smooth, even layers of toning. The acorn could use more toning to convey it’s form.

Hi Karen- you are off to a good start! The flower is nicely rendered! White flowers often have a bit of blue and/or green and you can use those colors to add toning. The leaves are reading a bit flat and are in need of some dimension. Remember leaves have a dark side and a light side on either side of the main vein. There will also be light and…[Read more]

Gorgeous Margaret!!!! One hydrangea head would be a challenge!

Hi Diane- is this a slipper orchid? I am confused by the red/green area above the pink petals. Not sure how to read that middle section. A little more dark toning would help in other areas – like the underside of the green leaf.

Hi Mary- you have a good range of tones. The highlight could be stronger especially on the two on the left. Keep practicing even layers of smooth toning. The fruit is looking grainy especially in the lighter and mid-tones.

Hi Ishbel, This is what I would call a muscular drawing. Its solidity jumps out at you! I like the muted hues. There is a unity to the colors. My only comment would be that compositionally it tends to direct the viewer off to the right.
-
Yes, I also thought all those amputated stems on the left were a bit problematic!

Beautiful! You are getting those nice darks! I think the maroon aspects of this drawing are working better than the yellows. You have chosen a very cool, greenish color for your yellow shadows. This can work, but be careful it doesn’t get too grey. Leave more of the yellow color or add some warm ochres. Also, I’d like to see a rounder shape in…[Read more]

Nice petal exercise! I feel the curl! The cast shadow could be defined a bit more. It seems a bit out of control. Nothing too hard edged, but a bit more in keeping with the shape of the petal.

Yes, Hydrangeas are challenging! I love this drawing as it is. The colors are spectacular! The deep greens agains the saturated colors, so beautiful! And it really gives the essence of the hydrangea. Good Job! My suggestions would be to think of the drawing as a whole and convey the light on form as if it were a large sphere. There could be a more…[Read more]

Good call from Vern and nice fix from you! I might even add just a touch of cast shadow where the sepal meets the rose to indicate that it curves under the flower.

Nice petal studies! I think you can get even more dynamics by adding some more dark, darks and, if you can, erase a bit to bring out a more pronounced highlight.
