Congratulations on trying something so ambitious. So much detail and so many bright colours, well worth all the time and effort! 🤩

Thank you , Margaret. I usually like to draw plants with tropical colours or geometric shapes, so this was a new direction for me, and it was fun!

Hi Karen- you are off to a good start! The flower is nicely rendered! White flowers often have a bit of blue and/or green and you can use those colors to add toning. The leaves are reading a bit flat and are in need of some dimension. Remember leaves have a dark side and a light side on either side of the main vein. There will also be light and…[Read more]

Thank you Doug. I watched the leaf video after doing this one, and hopefully the oak leaf drawing is better. Still hard to do subtle veining!

Will try some green or blue on white flowers. These were so starkly white it was hard to get the feeling!

Thanks Vern. Great advice on the highlight. I find the way you described it very helpful. I’ll keep the relative values in mind going forward. I miss you guys also. Feels like we are in prison here in Australia. In lockdown again and vaccine roll-out has been pathetic. I’m afraid an art retreat is not one of the exceptions for travel sadly. Hope…[Read more]

Got a bit lost in the detail on this one and trying to make the shadow side work. A challenge.

Yes, Hydrangeas are challenging! I love this drawing as it is. The colors are spectacular! The deep greens agains the saturated colors, so beautiful! And it really gives the essence of the hydrangea. Good Job! My suggestions would be to think of the drawing as a whole and convey the light on form as if it were a large sphere. There could be a more…[Read more]

Stunning!

Gorgeous Margaret!!!! One hydrangea head would be a challenge!
-
To me, your hydrangea piece is everything.

Claire, I am flattered that you think so. It’s funny how you start a drawing not knowing where it will go – I almost gave up on this one several times but I would just out it aside for awhile then come back to it with new insights. I finished it just as all the hydrangeas in my garden were drying up and I had no more to pick for drawing a…

Can’t stop looking at this. It makes me feel like trying one but even one head feels really challenging!! Amazing work.

Love how you captured the ripples on the sides of the petals – I struggle with that!

Hi Mary- you have a good range of tones. The highlight could be stronger especially on the two on the left. Keep practicing even layers of smooth toning. The fruit is looking grainy especially in the lighter and mid-tones.
-
Hi Doug, Any tips for even layers of toning? Less pressure, smaller areas at one time? I don’t know what or how to modify to get a different result. Thanks so much for your help.
