Hi Karen- the lily of the valley leaves are having the same problem as the peony. The leaf on the right needs a range of tones because it would be more shaded than the left side, which is more exposed to the light source. I see your range of colors on the bar at the top of the page. Now you need to apply a range to the subject itself.

Hi Karen- the thing I noticed on the original drawing is that it needed more toning. That is why since you have added color there is hardly any toning visible. As you add more layers of color you have to keep adjusting the range of tones – especially when it needed more toning to begin with. You can still go in and add a range of tones (donβt f…[Read more]

Thank you Doug. I started doodling this on really cheap paper, which now has a hole in it, but I will go back and add toning and highlights.

These comments are so encouraging. And helpful. Thank you!

Even our sketches on cheap paper are important and beloved. π

Hi Fanny- the colors are great! I think you could use a little more dark toning to enhance their form.
-
Thank you! I didn’t think it would be possible to have realistic colors with only the starter kit pencils. I improved the toning in version 2 and hopefully it didn’t affect the highlights in a bad way.

Gorgeous, Mary Jo. I still think you could bring some dark indigo in in a few key spots to darken a touch more. But obviously not necessary – only if you want. Beautifully done.

This is such a great progression – the cut outs and the drawn ons.

Great job finishing this as I know you had to finish it from a photo. The colours looks great.

Nice to see those flowers, Rita. They really pop. The plant behind is a bit confusing since the colours are so different I’m not sure if it’s the same plant or not.

Fun observations, Julie. You could bring in some ivory or a bit of light ochre to bring in some of those colours from the shells.

Thanks so much Katy! I appreciate you feedback about the high light on the edge and on the stem.

Ah, I know that feeling. You can try making colour notes and then adding some colour later – it can be a fun exercise.
