Hi Cynthia- nice saturation! There are a couple of places I would revisit. Be careful not to outline the subjects. Also the highlight seems to have a crackled finish where I would expect cherries to have a smooth finish. The cast shadows will be darkest nearest the fruit and fade out as it moves away. Be sure to have nice smooth, even toning. Nice job!
-
Hi Doug, Thanks so much for your comments! Very helpful. I agree about the crackly finish and the cast shadow. Cynthia
-
Ooh yes the saturation is so good.
-
I might have made a too many layers resulting in the crackly finish.

Nice drawing. I like the cleaness of it. I think you could focus more on achieving the feel of the cylinder, especially the verticals. Think of the light source. Which side is it coming from? The bars would be darker on the opposite side. Also, decide where your highlight would be.
-
Great start Cynthia – keep up the good work. 🙂 Tone those cylinders.
-
Such a tough view/angle to draw – which I why I never do it – ha! Do a side view next time – and think of showing me more light green near the highlight so you have a gradation form the highlight out to a lighter green and then darker as it curves away. You could even try putting down the lightest yellowish green over the whole form (except for…[Read more]

Katy, thank you for comment! I really appreciate it. It is my first flower ever, started at Wendy’s workshop, it was so much fun! I will use your advice to improve the next one.

The stem placement makes sense now Douglass.

Oh, white flowers! So challenging! This is a good start. I’d try doing what Wendy does in many of her drawings: Draw an individual petal on the side of the paper. This way you can work out the colors and values before tackling the whole flower.

I so love seeing the practice drawings of an artist. This seems so full of life. Tells me about your struggle.

Yes! Aren’t those cross sections fun to draw! I’m trying to decide if I’d like to see a cast shadow on the whole fruit. I do somehow want to see something more in this composition. Not sure what! It is so lovely as it is.

Hi Marina,
Such a sweet, cheery drawing! Again your toning is well done. I also like the colors you have chosen. Yellow can be a difficult color to work with. Good job! My problem with this drawing is more about the foreshortening. The cylinder/cone of the flower doesn’t seem to match the petals. The ellipse of the top of the tube should be more…[Read more] -

Thanks Doug. Haven’t been doing too much as my right shoulder heals from tendonitis and bursitis but trying again. This was started pre injury. Added a few small touches and just doing some rough drawings atm. -

Thanks, Katy. Yes, I am hesitant to bring any darkness to it because I really like the bright yellow and don’t want to muddy it -but I think it does need a little attention. My shadows need work. I might just do a new version and mess about more with the cast shadow.
-
Hi Colleen- the colors are beautiful and the skin texture and patterning is great!!!! The cast shadows are really throwing me off! Based on the highlight on the intact apple the cast shadows are going in the wrong direction. I think the cut piece on the top right is probably lying on the table surface, but it looks like it is standing on end. That…[Read more]

Colleen – these leaves are beautiful!!! The greens are so rich! Be aware that the secondary veins usually taper from the main vein as they move to the outside edges. Secondary veins often also don’t go directly to the edge and they may curve up as they near the edge and become even smaller. You are almost there!
-
Hi Colleen- what an unusual subject! The colors are beautiful! You could use more darker toning to emphasize it’s form. I am only seeing a cast shadow on the center piece and a little on the cut piece on the right. Both the whole fruit and the cut piece on the right would be casting a shadow also.
-
This is so beautiful, Colleen! You captured the texture, colour and shape of the chayote so perfectly! The angle you drew the whole one is amazing too! Interestingly, I have never seen the chayote plant. I wonder what it looks like – will check!
-
Ah now I remember, I have seen the plant after all. It is a climbing plant!

Thanks, Doug and Sam. I’m leaving the two dandelion drawings just ink. It seemed right, the way the textures stood out, even though the yellow flowers are so appealing. I’ll try one in color soon. There are zillions of them around! - Load More
