I think I am almost done with the leaves but unsure on whether to add roots…

Great job Renata! Love your variety of rich greens! What are the roots like? If they are going to be mostly obscured by the leaves I would not put them in. Adding the flower at some point would be a nice addition. Beautiful!!!!

Thanks for the helpful comment, Doug! You are quite right, the tap root would be mainly behind the leaves. Only the roots sprouting laterally would be visible. I like the idea of adding a flower later on! I am finding it a bit dull right now! I might play with tracing paper to see what it would look like if I added the (almost invisible) tap root…[Read more]

I love this tumble of leaves! Beautiful composition. The greens are positively luminous! They have a mosaic quality.

Lovely to see the sliced orange. Makes a nice composition. And good foreshortened drawing. Cast shadows are a challenge. You have such rich warm darks in your oranges, the color of the shadow seems too gray. I’d add some worm brown. and watch the shape. They would probably not fall so far below the oranges and would be darker directly under the…[Read more]

Fun page! I love the way the final bean looks like a crazy cartoon character!
I once did a sketchbook/nature journal with a little emerging bean seed in the corner of each page. In the end it worked sort of like a flip book. So much fun. I had my bean in a wet paper towel in a baggie. How did you preserve yours? -

Hi Bettina, Looks good! I can read the leaf better now. However, you may have gone too dark. I’d lighten the green as it emerges from the stem, so the value is closer to the value fo the flat top of the leaf.

Thank you, Sam. Seeing highlights is difficult for me. This really helped. -

Thanks, Maureen. I’m enjoying the format right now with spring popping up so fast. -

Vern showed us how to use the spoon to find the highlights in the tulip petal-front and back. Hold the spoon in the same position as the petal you are drawing and under the same light. This helps to see where the high lights are. It really helped me because I found it difficult to to see the highlight on the petal that I was drawing. -

Katy. thank you for your encouragement. We have lesser celandine, also called fig buttercup, growing everywhere right now. It is quite invasive but beautiful. Just took Wendy’s and Sam’s workshop on Leaf Clusters and this is the result. Wonderful teachers !

I had them in a bag with a wet paper towel too. When they become larger I take away the platic bag, otherwise they start to mold.
