Thanks Pam, I ruined quite a few oranges trying to decide how to make a composition.

Beautiful! And it brings back happy memories of gardening in California.

Thank you Ellery. When my florist poppies finally died. I emailed my friend in Oakland to go out one Sunday and photograph Poppies in the field. She even dissected one and photographed that also. Her lighting was not from the right. However, her photographs were great. It gave me a sense of its wild beauty. I can understand what you are saying…
-
So stunning and delicate, Camille. You’ve captured the feel of those petals and the calyx and stem. Brava.
-
Being a Californian, this is so striking to me, Camille. I love the water drops. I love that you show the unfolding of the sepals (fused together to form a calyptra), and the beautiful magenta at the base. I love the delicateness and the soft receding green leafs behind. Just gorgeous. Oh California. 🙂
-
Love that, Camille!
-
Beautiful, Camille – it really captures an ethereal/fleeting quality.

I’m pretty sure I’ve got more work to do here, but thought I’d post it. Suggestions?

Beautiful drawing as it is, Sheila! Maybe I would bring in more darks in the leaves. The flower, stem and leaves are of a piece with a limited value scale. However, the bulb having such rich darks and saturated color, it is stealing the show.
-
Thanks, Ellery.
-
Yes, I agree with you about the values. Yellows are so tricky for me. I try for the translucent quality, but then it’s pale. I’ll work on your suggestions. Maybe some watercolor. Thanks for the feedback!
-
GORGEOUS! And yes to watercolour 🙂
-
This is really beautiful, @sheilayoshpe!
-
Thanks, Renata! I’m going to work a little more on it.

Hi Ellery, Yes, a beauty. Lovely to look at! These color scales look so great on Kraft paper! And such a good resource for you as you do other drawings.
-
This is so gorgeous – reminds me of colour studies from the women in the BauHaus Weaving community.
-
Thank you Katy and Sam. I enjoyed your color theory class. Thank you for your comment Sam, it inspired a deep dive into the colorful work of Gunta Stolzl and Paul Klee and others.

This was drawn from real leaves, still having trouble with my shadowing. It was a quick sketch and i need to put more time in to it.

This is my tomato today Mar 21 and everything else in my portfolio is from the last month, starting with the lemon which was my first attempt. I see improvement but have a long way to go.

This is really looking spherical! but I’m getting an outline. Observe and think about the shadow directly under the tomato. I call it the “sit down shadow” It shouldn’t come up the side so far and should sort of “puddle” slightly under the tomato.
-
Good point, thank you Katy.
-
Hi Katherine, I don’t know if you’re ready to try watercolour yet – but why not!? It’ll take away the texture and dots of paper so that you can communicate a smooth surface of your subject.
-
Hi Katherine! I heard you say yesterday on the webinar that you are one month in to botanical art. That was me in August! I remember my first webinar and being stunned at the art people were creating. And inspired! You are doing great! This community has been very supportive of my learning process. I was such a non-artist I didn’t even understand…[Read more]

Thank you Sara. I feel the illustration is relaxing for me so good for my health, my heart and my skill set. I’m going to keep going and see if i can develop this skill. Encouragement appreciated!

This tomato and every drawing i have done (except the first lemon) has watercolor incorporated but i may not be using enough color ….so i’m trying to now amp it up and it made a difference in the branch i tackled last night.
-
You’re doing great, Katherine! I love the colour here.

Hi Katherine, You have a very interesting style. I find your drawings very pleasing. Especially this one. Rather restful. I like the simple bold shapes. And gentle colors. Also beautiful line work on the fringing under the cap and at the bottom of the stem. Very nice.
-
Thank you Katy for your feedback.
-
Great sketch. Leaves are tricky and always take longer than we think. Remember to still think of your highlights and shaded sides. Did you emboss? You can always go back in and tone down some of the embossing in some places with watercolour so the embossing. lines don’t steal the show.
-
I did emboss and i will now try to add water color to tone it down …thank you again.

I really like this tomato, Katherine. Your drawings have a lovely quality, as Katy mentioned. So happy to see your drawings posted for us here. Keep up the good work and be kind to yourself!
