Pam, So beautiful! A lovely study in greens and reds. And such an interesting plant!

Nice work on these twigs! The one comment I would have is on your reflective light. It is much too light and appears like a white line. I would darken it and have a more smooth transition in to the core shadow.

What a great page! I like how you have included all the elements in a pleasing composition. I’d add a bit more darks in the leaves. Especially in those little triangles where the leaves meet. I see it in the shadow of the stem. Just more of that.

Hi Renata, First of all, beautiful drawing! I would say you don’t need to add the flowers if they are not there. You are drawing the plant at a different stage in its cycle. This is good information for a botanical illustration. Adding the fruit is fine if your intention is to show this plant in all its aspects. If you are doing a portrait of a…[Read more]

That is one big, round tulip Sheila! Love seeing this set of informal sketch drawings. A nice contrast to the gorgeous finished drawings I am used to seeing from you!!!!!
-
Hooray for fast and loose times. Love this page.

I really enjoyed Jean’s workshop. I thought it was such great addition for Wendy to bring to our practice.
-
Agree with Vern!
-
Thanks, Vern. I’m getting over being nervous about using a pen!?!
-
Thanks, Sam. Yes, I’m enjoying having an additional approach to botanical observations.
-
I enjoyed the workshop, too. I really like using our watercolor pencils and regular pencils with the pen. It’s fun to play with the materials.

Just when I think you couldn’t get any more perfect, you out do yourself! You do surface texture better than anyone I know. And what a beautiful cast shadow!

Hi Bettina, Lovely drawing! Sweet, gentle curve to your stem. And those petals are nicely done. Just a touch more darks would make the flower pop.

Thank you Doug…..this tulip was growing in a cluster of bulbs to include amaryllis, drawn life size….. your comments were eye opening and I should have caught that bud does not belong there during the composition stage! Also, I was having trouble saturating the greens, even using watercolor pencils. Thank you for your feedback.

Thank you. I really appreciate your comments. As you have seen – I have struggled to get the shadow right in my other drawings too. I did an old crinkly leaf and got the shadow too dark!! Will try again!

Looking good Marilyn!

So beautiful Pam, wow! Is this the little plant you were drawing last fall?
-
Thanks guys. And yes. Same plant 🙂
-
This is wonderful! It has an otherworldly quality to it
-
Perfection Pam!!!!
-
Gorgeous!
-
Stunning, Pam. Love the delicate fade out of the base mosses. And your colour work is exquisite.
-
Extraordinary. Can you share how you get the veining so fine? I am a novice and getting small tiny lines is a struggle for me right now. Your work is beautiful Pam.
-
Thanks everyone! Katherine, I started off by doing a lot in watercolor before putting in layers of colored pencil. I was able to get very fine lines with a very small brush – size 0. And then when I switched over to colored pencil, I waited until I was mostly done to darken the veins were already water colored in, and add more veins. I used a very…[Read more]

Good advice….the grey/green would be a nice choice for the buds.

Thanks so much for the wonderful compliment Katy! I really appreciate it (:

All those little shadows in those nooks and crannies are amazing. Just lovely.
-
This postcard was in my pile of mail, and it reminded me of your art.
-
Thanks Pam! Wow, I hadn’t thought of that before, since her work is abstracted, but I can definitely see the relation! The obsession with pattern (dots, nets, etc) Thanks for sharing! 🙂

Yes to @pgthompson to Seastar meets Yayoi. Beautiful Jill, I adore it. Also, kind of makes me want a fancy cookie my grandma with a Dutch background used to make.
-
Also, I’m around so many people lately who do all their art on photoshop – I love being in the club of us who love to detail with our hands and paint and pencils and paper.

Thanks Doug! Do you think I should add an open tulip on the lower left?

Hi everyone, hope you are having a lovely weekend! I would profit from your wisdom here. First, because I had never tried white flowers. Second, because I am drawing this from a few photos a friend sent me of her Mandacaru cactus (which is about 5m tall) – really tricky to draw from photos! And also because I am now trying to draw the the actual…[Read more]

Looking just stunning to me, Renata. The style of lettering looks great and the colour bars below.

Thank you, Katy and Sam. I will work on it again today and try to finish it!

I see the tomato now. I think it was the slightly angular contours that threw me. Also maybe I was eating an apple at the time. You are doing great with color. I think as you get larger you can play around with it a bit more. Check out the variegated apples I did in my portfolio. They were great fun.
