• Hi Denise- the roots look good! Remember that there will be roots in the forefront, the middle and the back and they will be toned accordingly. Even though they can be very narrow, remember that roots are elongated cylinders so they should have an indication of a range of tones on each individual root to
convey their form. With the plaid…[Read more]

  • You are getting there Margaret! The horizontal cylinders are still missing the range of tones that are going to give them their form. The vertical cylinder on the left is close to what all of the cylinders should look like. Be sure not to lose the highlight.

  • Much better form on this version Margaret! Nice range of tones that give the sphere wonderful form. A couple of things to consider- the highlight could still be lighter. The reflected light currently looks whiter than the main highlight. The reflected light should not be as white/light as the main highlight. Also keep working on having the…[Read more]

  • Hi Helene! I have not seen a purple Asclepius before. The colors are very pleasing and the image is beautifully drawn. There are a couple of areas I would revisit. The stems in the background of the flower cluster on the right need more attention. Even if they are white (or a light color) they would be in shadow and need to be both shadow and form…[Read more]

  • Hi Becky- I think the high hopes you had are well deserved! You are all ready on your way there! To begin with the colors and the level of saturation on the areas you have finished are wonderful! The dark leaf is gorgeous and I don’t think it will be distracting once the other leaves are fully realized. I have no doubt that because the flower is s…[Read more]

  • Hi Sara- you have conquered plums to be sure! This drawing has so much going for it! Fantastic colors, textures and toning to name a few! The thing I love the most is the composition! It is unique, fun and has so much personality! Wow!

  • Wow Sara! This is gorgeous! Love everything about it and you totally nailed the reflected light!

  • Great idea! I thought this was some kind of exotic squash!

  • Great observations Sara! This branch segment is beautifully rendered! The only thing I think you could do is add ,ore dark shadow tones to the right side. It is especially missing on the upper lighter section of the branch and the rest could use some too! It is almost there! Wonderful job!

    • I am going to post an example of this exercise on the Feed so you can see what you are striving for.

    • I really appreciate your feedback. I am trying!!! Thanks for your patience.

    • Yes. Sara’s plum drawings show the reflected light so well. I will try again.

  • I know when something’s feeling off compliments can feel wrong, but still, Wow! The shapes and curls and overlaps of the petals and leaves are really lovely. I also like the overall composition.

I have a few ideas (to be taken with a grain of salt–I’m not as far along as you skill wise!). What about adding some blues/purples to the deepest…[Read more]

  • Work in progress – I had high hopes on this one but I’m not loving and I’m not sure why. Would love feedback/suggestions as I work to finish it.

    • Hi Sara, I agree. These are so realistic. I like the detailed stem and line on the plum. Very beautiful! I am trying to replicate your cast shadows…

    • Thank you both. I had a lot of fun doing this page! These have got to be my favourite colours to work with.

  • I kept having trouble following the ridges as I drew them in my initial sketch, so I got out my trusty masking tape and cut it into 1/4 inch strips. It ended up making it really easy to see the movement of the squash.
