• Thank you! Most of the drawing I’ve done in the past has been in graphite, so this part doesn’t seem to unfamiliar. I’m still having trouble making the jump to thinking about colour. Is it okay to go so dark if I were to add colour ontop, or is the graiselle stage meant to be more subtle?

  • Gotta Macgyver these things whenever possible!

  • I don’t know how “of” became “odiferous”! Sorry for any confusion!

  • What great texture on your green cucurbita pepo! Is it the same as a zuchini? (I tried googling this and didn’t feel very enlightened by the end.)

    • Great observations Sara! This branch segment is beautifully rendered! The only thing I think you could do is add ,ore dark shadow tones to the right side. It is especially missing on the upper lighter section of the branch and the rest could use some too! It is almost there! Wonderful job!

    • Hi Doug. 🙂 I’ve gone back and added a bit more shadow where you suggested. I’m wondering if I should have pushed it even more but I chickened out.

    • Your update looks wonderful Sara! Beautifully drawn and great details from the start and the form is now much improved!

    • Hi Denise- the roots look good! Remember that there will be roots in the forefront, the middle and the back and they will be toned accordingly. Even though they can be very narrow, remember that roots are elongated cylinders so they should have an indication of a range of tones on each individual root to convey their form. With the plaid exercise…[Read more]

    • Nice job on the cherries Denise. You have a good range of tones on the pair of cherries that also show a leaf. The other two pairs need more range of tones to emphasize their form.

  • Thanks, Doug. My perpetual journal is fun for playing around, which I guess I do on regular pages, but it’s short and sweet until …next year’s week comes around.

  • Thanks, Doug. I’m also ready for more fall days and colorful leaves!!

      • Especially love the maple seed Sheila! It is making me think of Autumn, which you can tell is coming. There have been days where there was that autumn feeling in the light and air! Can’t wait!

      • As they say – practice makes perfect! Or something like that! Nice job!

      • Yes Sara! Great form and more saturated color! It still has a really earthy feel to it, which is fantastic! It looks like it was just pulled out odiferous the ground! Congrats!

      • This is beautifully rendered Sara and you have achieved wonderful form. There is a lot of texture showing and I assume that is from the paper you are using. Fantastic job with the reflected light too! It has the organic shape you want to convey a glow! Bravo!

      • You did an amazing job getting the kneaded erasers so smooth and round! Love your ingenuity!

      • So fun Sheila! And I love the title!

        • I was amazed at how much I was able to improve my control over the course of the afternoon just be repeating the same exercise. Look at those blotchy and streaky first attempts!

        • Thank you for your feedback! I went back and tried changing it, and it does look better. Also, I belated realized that it’s a beet, not a radish, so I changed the title, but wanted other people to know that your comment made sense at the time!

        • @doug-milne Thank you for your suggestions on the beet (previously labelled radish, my mistake!). Pushing both the highlight and shadow did help with the form. The colours are a little off in this one because I tried photographing it instead of scanning, but it still has the nice soft feel in real life.

        • I really like Wendy’s wooden shapes she uses to demonstrate light sources. This was my makeshift solution using my kneaded erasesr!
