Great! The colour looks fantastic. I recognized these little fellows right away. Keep your shadows light and smooth.

But you did a good job! You can outline it sharp and cleanly with a Verithin pencil. Or a very sharp dark sepia – lightly, but to get nice, clean edges. Wendy has a good white petal from an anemone on page 129 of Joy of Botanical Drawing. But by all means – set yourself up to succeed. I like her One Tulip Petal lesson.

The big question – can you clip any when you next walk by? 🙂

1. A great trick to make white pop on white paper is to place a green leaf behind it if possible. You can also try using grey or earth green for shading/toning,overlaps within the flower – but carefully. 🙂 2. It’s a bit hard to tell with the angling question in this format- but I think I like it as is. 3. Yes, when in doubt, we always need more…[Read more]

Love it! The pencil – once upon a time a twig. 🙂 If you like, you can go back into your pencil – use a fine eraser to lift off a highlight down the left of centre side, and then saturate your golden yellow til smooth. 🙂 So fun – even put some water colour on top of the golden/yellow pencil if you dare.

Great inspiration that Milkweed and the hike, I bet. You can try measuring and then drawing lightly with your H graphite pencil first, and then re drawing more carefully while still observing your plant with your coloured pencil of choice – with a very sharp tip!

The ideal is one light source coming over your left shoulder at a 45 degree angle. (or from the right if you are a lefty) Taping together two pieces of cardboard, etc. and putting it in back of your subject can not only help eliminate competing light sources, but allow you to set up the light as it should be. You are off to a good start!

Stunner stunner stunner. So great that a bog remains up there – they are always so endangered. Incredible ecosystem.

Ah I see – yes this worked out well.

Hi Kyra – good job – now go back in and lift away a bit more of a highlight on the right one with your eraser. And smooth out the dark shadow in the middle (If the light is coming from the left) so that the form rounds.
