I implemented the suggestions given so decided to post the reworked piece. Too bad I don’t know how to do a side by side before and after😩

Yeah Wendy! I think the bottom right hulls still need some definition, yes? I wonder if your name was signed under the curve of the top branch? Maybe it’d be too strong there, just an idea – could try it with tracing paper. My eye keeps going to the blank gap above that left acorn cap… This drawing is fantastic. Those orange lantern, those…[Read more]

Not the best pic, but wanted to get this up for the webinar, although I won’t be able to be there. I’ll probably throw in a couple of needles falling and the name of the conifer. Any feedback appreciated.

Lovely, Amanda. I think the name and the falling needles are a great idea. I could also see a habit drawing of the tree in the bottom right in pencil…
-
Thanks Sam! The habit drawing is a nice idea.

What a lovely testimony to your parents.

Yes, lovely testimony. I cherish my Mom’s white climbing rose, it was her mother’s. And she loved it. I’ve never drawn it. But you have inspired me. Next June when it blooms.
-
As for your drawing…congrats on trying the wax paper embosser trick. I have yet to try it. You are inspiring me on that one too! It seems to work quite nicely!

👍thank you Katy, time to sharpen my dark sepia and get to it. So good to know in all my drawings I need to work on that. Always nice to know your general weakspot. Very happy you took the time to help me.

I mean, as you know, I am just a huge fan of your drawing, and this magnolia yields no exception. Elegant as always. I suppose you could go a bit darker in some overlap areas to increase the drama, but I like your soft, flowing, harmonious style.
-
Thanks for your thoughtful comments Sam. The magnolia came from the NTBG and I realise I also have it growing in my garden, but only one third of the size!!

Try Dark sepia

You are being too hard on yourself! That top petal is beautiful! The toning is very sensitive. I’d add more dark tones on both. Dark sepia perhaps. The embossing is the biggest problem. It seems all one weight and value. Keep practicing working with it. Maybe do a whole page of emboss practice.

Nice! Try a bit more shadow on the underside right as it overlaps.

Lovely leaf! You are really getting a nice shape with that toning. I might add a sharpish dark line on the underside of the mid rib. Make sure it tapers toward the tip. And if you add a little dark line next to the veins. That will help. Just keep it very subtle. Embossing is difficult. I still struggle with it. I don’t like the way one has to work blind.

Hi Mama Mia,
Looking good! Nice sensitive toning. Just need to hit those dark darks a bit more. -

One of my better attempts, all though the embossed veining is mediocre at best.

ooh, nice. I think those darker purples and violets could come out a touch more, and outline darker/sharper in those colours. towards the centre of the flower – like my eye is being drawn out from dark to light – centre to tips of petals. Gorgeous. What great dancer-like curve to that left blade. And wonderful gradation of colour.
This is beautiful!
Gorgeous Dora! Love the composition!
Thanks for the feedback. Will try and apply your advice. @sam-mcwilliams
