  • Hi Isabel, Nice drawing. You are so good at rendering those individual flowers. And I really see a round shape to the inflorescence. I think you can get some more darks in the leaves and stem especially under the flower,

  • Yes, much better. I’m really liking this now.

  • Hi Kristen, I’d like to see a closer view of each drawing. Seems like you have some good stuff going on, but hard to see on my screen. From what I can tell, you are right about going dark, but for my part I like the richness, You just need to be careful building it up. Wendy has a great video on leaves where she is more drawing the space between…[Read more]

  • Thank you. I used a lot of watercolour for this one but still feel there is confusion about which layer is on top. The lighter layer is actually an inner layer but wasn’t sure if shading it would be the right way to show it is an inner layer.

  • Hi Jody, Lovely drawing! The leaves are drawn beautifully! I love the way you transition the red into the green.

  • Thanks for you advice. I’ve always had issues with leaving light. I’ll give it a go.

  • Beautiful, Jody! Lovely composition. (I don’t like the stem ending right on the outline, It seem that you are indicating that it is coming from behind the frame, which would work, but be bolder about it. Take that side shadow down to the edge.
Over all the drawing is beautiful and your hand writing exquisite! I’m jealous.

  • Yes, love the vibrant colors! Now is the time to start bring in shape with some pencil toning. The upper left lemon is really coming along. Unfortunately, you have lost your highlight. (So easy to do.) But your shadow is defining the form nicely. I especially like the pointy nipple. Texture is nice on the other lemon, just need to get that…[Read more]

  • On the yellow leaf, start bringing in the darks around where you have the embossing. Wendy has a great video on drawing leaves. She is more drawing the area between the veins than the veins themselves. This is a great drawing to practice that on. As I said before, use a medium grey or brown, then switch to the darker pencil at the end.

  • Hi Pam. Nice use of color on the red leaf and I like that you are starting to use the embossing tool for the veins. It takes a while to master that tool. I’m still struggling with it. The problem with these leaves is that they have an outline feel. I think it is the same issue you were having with the leaf and black eyed susan. You are going too…[Read more]

  • Hi Pam. I really like the separate study of the center of flower. It has a beautiful loose organic feel. And I think you have the right idea to do studies of the individual petals. Do more of them. The drawing of the flower seems correct, but flat. I think you got too dark, too soon and were afraid to muddy the yellow, so held back on shading for…[Read more]

  • Hi Jane. This is a lovely drawing! I like how the leaf is handled with a light wash, so the bud can take full attention. I might add a bit more detail as it attaches to the stem and up to the first two leave, but only slightly. The only thing that bothers me is the very center of the flower. It seems to lose color and detail. There would be a…[Read more]

  • I really like this drawing! Rich colors! And you are getting a pretty good spheric shape. Nice detail work on the edges of the onion skin and the texture of the surface. Also It is very pleasing to look at, my eyes rest on the wide expanse of the surface, then are drawn to the touches of interesting detail at either end.

  • Hi Theodora,
Nice color and I really like the details on the stem! also the surface speckles are quite nice. I think you need to keep working on toning the spheric shape. This one looks half done. I can see the highlights and the shadow on the dark side. But you need more on the bottom and left side. Especially the bottom. Think about the light…[Read more]

  • Tulsi Basil in watercolor pencil and paint.
Left: Practice page. I sort of goofed up the leaves at the top and didn’t know how to correct so I moved on.
Middle: This is tiny. Like an inch and a half. I’m not happy with how dark the leaf in the middle is although it is darker in the photo. I’m not sure how to correct this.
    Right: mostly happy…[Read more]
