Thanks so much Vern! I did another one recently trying to incorporate Sam’s advice, which I’ll post – but will probably give this subject at least one more shot with your ideas as well – they are so fun.

These are some studies I did before I got started in the drawing. They are what I’m planning to add to the bottom. Do you think that will work? -

Thank you Wendy. Yup. That’s the latex dripping out of the stem. I’ll try to make it more obvious – great advice. My plan is to add some blowups of the individual flowers including a cross-section to show the structure and ovary. I wish you guys could smell the flower. It’s one of my favorite scents. -

Love this Pam. I think it is crying out for a few scattered flowers or something…..Is that a milkweed latex drip at the bottom? If so , I think you can make that more obvious as it almost appears to be the inside of the stem. I know you can do it! Love your description of how you accomplished this

Thanks Sam. Yes, I definitely need more highlights on the buds and I will work a bit on that! Let me know if you are ever over here! -

You really have an eye for detail! Lovely painting. I especially like the buds and small leaves.

Your paintings have such a soft touch. I love all the warm tones in the various nuts. Nice composition, too. My eyes are dancing all over the page!

Hi Eleanor, I’ve looked at your posts and what really stands out is your style! I see it in all of your paintings. It’s very unique. Do you draw other things besides botanicals?

Looking good Sinead. Do you have a Cadmium Yellow Lemon polychromo pencil? I can’t tell from your photo of your color bar of greens- it can be a good addition. Maybe the green got a little dark overall? The dark sepia and the red sphere look great to me.

Wendy always reminds me to tone the whole object first so I can feel the roundness of the overall form, before I start to get all involved with the surface details – that always helps me to remember to do the basic form first – or I get lost too early in the details, and the viewer can’t see easily what’s going on. 🙂

With polychromos, some drawers had success using some yellows underneath first, and then layering green/yellow/green. Some liked using the Cadmium Yellow Lemon Polychromo. And some drawers really enjoyed trying this green tomato on the brown Stonehenge Kraft paper, so they could amp up the white highlight. Trying an initial water color layer of a…[Read more]

Yeah looking so good! It’s so fun to see the build-up/creation of it all. 🙂

Gorgeous. You could try going easier on the shadow. I’ve heard Vern and Wendy say the shadow should be like a stage hand – a supportive cast – not competing with the main “player”; when its too dark it kin-of pushes towards us and is distracting. I’ll look forward to seeing your experiments – but no denying you’ve got a great, strong style 🙂

I can hear Wendy’s voice saying – Make sure all your highlights on those petals and petal buds are strong, if you want to. And it looks great the way it is.
