The leaf is nicely rendered Patricia. In addition to the shadow toning you have along the left side of the main vein, you could have a little toning along the right side edge and possibly a couple of other spots. When the subject is yellow, golds, browns or greens work well for shadow toning instead of dark sepia, which can muddy the bright yellows.

Thank you, Doug. That’s very helpful. I always forget that the dark sepia isn’t the only shadow possibility.

I know! Sometimes, however, I get so taken with the colors and patterns that I forget all about paying attention to the dimensionality of the leaf. I’m wanting to capture more of the texture as well as the colors and patterns.
-
Hi Patricia- Agreed! It is so easy to head right to working on the colors and patterning. The fun, challenging things are calling our names! It is also tricky working on flat, colored leaves because there is often not much dimension visible. Especially when there is a lot of pattern! In those instances I find it helps me to think of how I would do…[Read more]

The colours of the pears are so smooth. Wonderful.

Sigh… Soooo beautiful!!

Good lord Doug. You are amazing

Incredibly beautiful~ I want to keep looking at it for its beauty and also to learn from it. Thank you!

Thank you all! This was a commission piece. A friend asked me for a drawing of two pears together as a gift for her husband. A pair of pears in their family history represented his parents. It was kismet that the five leaves represented their five children. I thought that was a great and touching story that made the piece even more special to them.

Great job Ishbel! Something to consider as far as composition goes – I wish the two branches were integrated more. Possibly a third type of winter branch that would start at or intersect the negative space above the large horizontal leaf and angle down to the left. It would end in the negative space between the stems of red berries. Personally, I…[Read more]

Thank you, Doug, for your advice. I tried to add darks to the bottom leaves, but I am not happy with what I did, especially the bottom left leaf. I hope to receive more help at the next webinar.

Hi Ingrid- it is getting better! There are still pieces that are not uniform with their toning. You really challenged yourself by having so many pieces and adding the details. Generally the overlapping grid lesson uses simple pieces (pencils, chopsticks, etc make good models). The next exercise would be a drawing of (at least three) overlapping…[Read more]

Hi Machi! Your leaves are beautifully drawn as I have come to expect from you! I think you could use a little more dark toning in places on the bottom leaves, especially on the leaf at bottom left. I am a little thrown by the deep fuschia color of the top leaves, but autumn leaves can be so unique!

Hi Ingrid- you have a good range of tones on the crab apples. Even if the crab apples were dried out causing the irregular shapes, I would smooth out the edges to make the apples look more like how we would expect them to look.

Autumn leaves collected while taking a walk in the neighborhood. Top two came from one tree and the bottom three came from another tree. Don’t know the names of the trees. I will have to wait for next spring to see what they are.
