Hi Sheila- is it too late to have the poppy seed head angle off to the left a little?

Nice job Glenn! As much as I love the simplicity of the composition I think I would like the image better if the stem was shorter. Maybe like an inch below the third thorn up from the bottom.

Great job Carol! Really nice sheen on the rhizome! Everything is beautifully rendered! If the roots are flat you are good. If the roots are elongated cylinders then there should be a range of tones on each root to convey their roundness. Even though the roots are thin you can still have a small range including a highlight. Wonderful job!

Partially desiccated iris rhizome that I didn’t plant in time. The leaves had dried except for one that was still green! Practicing roots and overlaps on leaves.

Thanks, Doug! I see what you mean about the roots. They are very thin, almost spider-webby–I actually made them appear thicker. I hope to join the discussion, but will also play around with changes, based on your suggestions!

Thanks, Glen! I’m really excited to draw the cinnamon fern. Their fertile fronds are so beautiful.

I think the additional rose leaves work. I’m not happy with the stem leading to the nasturtium on its right. Glued 🫤. Going to give this a rest for now.

Beautiful drawing, Pam! This is one of my favorite ferns and grows all over in my woodland, sometimes it hangs out with Joe Pye and the meadow plants, sometimes it chills out in the cool shady hollow. The sterile fronds turn yellow and disappear as the first cold weather hits but the fertile fronds are poking up all over year round. Ostrich fern…[Read more]

This is a painting that I’ve been working on for practice for my final NYBG project which is going to involve ferns. This is Sensitive Fern. It has both sterile and fertile fronds instead of spores on the backs of theirs leaves. I’m also thinking about doing a painting of Cinnamon Fern which also has sterile and fertile fronds.

This journalling is so inspiring, what kind of pen/pencil are you using for outline? Also wondering what kind of paper you’re using.
-
The paper in this spread was Fabriano Artistico Hot Press watercolor paper 140lb. We didn’t use any pencil, just pen and watercolor. We used a size 003 Sepia Micron pen. And we used a water-brush (like the Pentel Aquash Water Brush) to apply the watercolor. IT was really fun. For the other white spread, we used Fabriano Artistico Cold Press 140lb…[Read more]

This is the accordion journal from the in-person workshop at Wendy’s Farm. It was really fun to try out different papers and techniques. I really loved drawing with pen directly on paper without using pencil first – it was very freeing to not worry about mistakes. I’ll post each individual page too.
