Gorgeous Helene! I love all the textures! Lichens are an amazing subject and there certainly is no shortage of them. Bravo!

Not happy with the leaves…kinda dirty looking because they’re so overworked but they were curling in on themselves and I just couldn’t get that.

I think this is really lovely, definitely a big challenge to include so many leaves but I love the flow of them

Thanks Maureen. Yes, too many leaves. Next time I’ll do some strategic pruning 🤣

This is from a specimen taken on a camping trip. I was inspired by Doug’s drawing of lichen. It turned out quite different from his!

How do you achieve that perfect blend of colours/shading.

Thanks, Doug! I see what you mean about the roots. They are very thin, almost spider-webby–I actually made them appear thicker. I hope to join the discussion, but will also play around with changes, based on your suggestions!

Hi Sheila- is it too late to have the poppy seed head angle off to the left a little?

Nice job Glenn! As much as I love the simplicity of the composition I think I would like the image better if the stem was shorter. Maybe like an inch below the third thorn up from the bottom.

Great job Carol! Really nice sheen on the rhizome! Everything is beautifully rendered! If the roots are flat you are good. If the roots are elongated cylinders then there should be a range of tones on each root to convey their roundness. Even though the roots are thin you can still have a small range including a highlight. Wonderful job!

Partially desiccated iris rhizome that I didn’t plant in time. The leaves had dried except for one that was still green! Practicing roots and overlaps on leaves.

Thanks, Glen! I’m really excited to draw the cinnamon fern. Their fertile fronds are so beautiful.
