Hi Doug, I would like to get your advice on how to make the lotus flower come off the page. I see that darkening the leaves would help. I am thinking that adding a few leaves i.e. more small flat leaves that sit on the water and/or adding a wash of dark indigo water colour though I don’t have much practice with water colour wash. What do you think?

Hi Helene- another wonderful drawing! I agree with you that the addition of a small, flat leaf would help. Especially on the right side of the flower where there is a lot of negative space between the flower and the large leaves on the right side. I also agree with you about darkening the leaves. The large leaves are gorgeous, but there are a lot…[Read more]

I hadn’t thought about it being helpful to know where the shadows and light are until you suggested it Doug. I am going to do it going forward to get lots of practice with leaves.

These leaves look great Anne Marie! I am always picturing an open book when I draw leaves because it helps me remember where the highlights and shadows would be. I think Wendy explains it in her book.

You are getting there Anne Marie- the secondary veins are not as evident as they were on the previous post. Also when you look at a leaf you will often find that the secondary veins connect to the main vein. The left edge is now more defined, but be careful not to have it outlined. I would lighten the left edge as it is an area that is in…[Read more]

Gorgeous Erin! The pillows are reading really well! That is always the big question – am I done? I think as time goes by it becomes easier to recognize when a drawing is done. Especially if you are uncertain, but also just in general if you take a break from working on a piece it can give you some perspective when you look at it again. A lot of…[Read more]

Hi Deborah- I would never guess this is your first veggie! It is already a wonderful drawing and with the tweaks I suggested it will be even more so. I look forward to seeing more of your work!

Thank you so much for your help! This was the first veggie I drew in the first class I took here, and will definitely address these issues. I will also practice my toning.
