I think you are doing great, Bonnie. I like how you are getting nice and dark on the right side of that branch. Now try to feather that dark area into the midtone area a bit more so that you get a more smooth gradation.

Bonny, This lovely. Your color matching is wonderful, and I really like your attention to detail. You could push that 3 dimensional illusion a bit more by getting a little darker on the right right side of your branch, and maybe lifting out just a bit in highlight area. Also, be careful with your cast shadow. Do you see how your drawing has a…[Read more]

I added dark sepia and chrome oxide green on the right side of the stem and globe. I erased the left side slightly and added earth green yellowish on the stem and dark sepia under the petals.

Hi Mary- This version has more form than the original. I would add more dark toning on the right side and bottom of the 1/2 round area as that would be in shadow. This would also emphasize it’s form. Also take a look at the stem. There is minimal range of tones and both sides have the same values.

I’m keeping the first version and using the wild grasses for another picture with daisies, I think. Thanks for your thoughts! -

Hi Sheila- I did really like the first version, but this version has its merits too! I especially like the grass additions, but I also agree with you that it is a little busy. Particularly around the white flower.

Thank you both.
I think that Squawroot must be the most unglamorous flowering plant in our eastern hardwood forests. It seems that most people who see it for the first time don’t even realize that it is a wildflower and mistake it for some sort of mutant toadstool. But it is a true angiosperm, but one lacking chlorophyll, there is no green c…[Read more] -

Mary, I think you are succeeding! Getting darker in that center, and on the parts of the petals toward the center has really pushed that center back in space. Way to go!

This is not glued and I think it’s too busy, especially compared to the first version. I’m going to try it with just a few wisps of something to move out of the rectangular arrangement. Thoughts?

Thanks, Doug. I was thinking the composition was a little too rectangular and grass was suggested at the monthly meeting. I just posted that version. It’s not glued.

Looking good, Susan. You could add in some of the veining on the papery bit on the bud. and some more toning on your petals to get a bit more 3D form. But it’s a really nice drawing.

I love seeing this quick sketch and tonal study. I’t a great way to start!
