    • Beautiful, Elizabeth. Deep red roses are tough to do. I really like the lower right curling petal – I think that’s the most successful part of the rose. The leaves look really nice – nice shines on them. The overall flower shape is missing the mark somehow on it’s “cup” shape but I’m not sure how to articulate it…let’s ask @katylyness

    • Hi Elizabeth, Looks like Sam called me out on this one. So much that’s right in this drawing! I think the reason it’s not looking cup shaped is that even though you have done a good job on lighting each petal with nice full range of value, You aren’t looking at the rose as a whole. You need to think of the light source and how it would light land on a cup shaped object. Also You need to be careful not to make sharp white lines on the edge of the petals where they meet the dark shadow. It makes them look like cutout shapes. Here is a drawing of a red rose I did that might help you see what I am talking about.

    • Thank you both fir the critical eye. I really really struggled with this and almost just threw it out BUT I figured I should just post it to get your feedback. I have decided not to draw reds for a while 😩. I’ll try another view of a rose and practice that cup shape. Part of my problem was the hothouse rose was somewhat boxy. Over hybridized. Thanks again.

    • Hey Sam. Yes I get it now. See my comment below. Ugh. I’m a bit bummed out. But I’m sketching out another view. Many thanks.
      • Good work Elizabeth and I am so glad you showed us and didn’t throw it out. I try to post my “not fav” drawings too. It’s how we learn and you inspire me to draw! and thank you to @katylyness
