My hibiscus patterned flower. It was a very pale creamy pink and I was wondering how you can make something so pale a really dense shiny colour that still looks delicate? I am hoping I got most of the light right for the petals as I did not want to shade too much. I used Middle Purple Pink, White and Ivory but I still could have done with a much lighter colour to start with. Is it better just to buy some pastels in this case?
    • Oh and I didn’t get time to do the colouring before the flower shriveled up to nothing! I found it on a walk somewhere so unfortunately did not have access to another.

    • Light flowers are tricky but believe it or not they still need to be rendered with some darker accents so they don’t appear flat. The trick on light flowers is to use darks sparingly but still use bits here and there on the edges of petals and close to the center of the flower to create the illusion of depth. Hibiscus flowers are great subjects to practice over and over again. Just get a fresh flower and use it to help finish your drawing, or create a new one. I think your outer petal edges could feel more ruffly so that they aren’t so flat. Most hibiscus have petals that are ribbon like as if they create a rolling surface with areas that are raised and lowered.

    • Here is a hibiscus drawing of mine to illustrate the petal folds and depth.
