Looking for a little advice on finishing this nasturtium. Still lots of toning to do on the leaves but I chickened out of adding the smaller veins and now I think they look flat. Should I risk ‘painting some in with a white watercolour or is that asking for trouble?
Hi Monica- Thanks for sending the photo! The flowers and buds have great color saturation and are nicely rendered. They are not red like in the photo, but maybe you used different flowers for the drawing. Also look at the highlights on the petals. Each petal having a round highlight does not look realistic. You can see that your veins are much too wide on the leaves. The veins spread out from the round spot and get thinner as they move towards the outside edge of the leaf. After correcting the existing veins there are a couple of different things to try with the secondary veins. You could try a very sharp white or ivory pencil to draw in those veins. You could also try the white watercolor. As you are learning it is complicated if you don’t commit to the veins from the start. You are off to a good start!
