I adore this flower. Great job here with the color matching and the pattern on the leaves! Consider revisiting some of those petals, so that they feel graceful and delicate–some of them feel a bit angular and thick. Try drawing your petals starting with a central vein line, to establish the direction and movement of each petal, Then add thickness, and remember that a petal often gets a bit thinner as it approaches the center of the flower and at its terminal end. I also recommend experimenting with watercolor in your “ground” here, so that you achieve a smoother texture with less of the paper showing through. Beautiful work! (Did you draw these outside as they grew?! Quite the challenge!)
Thanks Vern! Here in MI there are trout lilies everywhere in the spring and it is so fun documenting the ephemerals before they disappear. I do have a picture of this clump from a park that I will attempt it again with your recommendations. I don’t have the watercolor supplies yet but am working on some bristol with just colored pencils. I thought attempting two new mediums at once would be a bit overwhelming but I’ll be getting those watercolors soon!
