For those who don’t know about slime moulds, these are some of the most adorable creatures on our planet. They were once classified as plants, then fungi and now in their own little group in the Protist kingdom. This little guy is only 2 mm tall, which is about normal for a slime mould, so I take the photos through my microscope. I found millions of them in the leaf litter last wet season. First try at iridescence… Botched up the highlight and had to fill it in to cover the error…. 🙁
This is amazing, @petapumpkineater — you really convey the feeling of iridescence. And thank you for sharing this information about these fascinating organisms!
Thank you @maureenclare! I think some of the sparkle in that photo is the LED light reflecting off the pencil, but the rough paper helps too because a bit of light shines through. Have you been working on anything this week?
Wow, wow, wow Peta!!! I did not even know such things existed! Fascinating!!!!You definitely captured the iridescence and your form toning is excellent! Were you thinking of trying to capture the bright white color of the stem?
Hi @doug-milne, once you start finding slime moulds, you never look back. It’s become a bit of an obsession of mine. 🙂 I was hoping to capture the white, but didn’t do that very well. Any tips?
@pgthompson They are not all iridescent like this one, but many of them are super beautiful, I’ll have to post them as I complete them in the future. (I actually enrolled in this course in the first place because I want to be able to draw slime moulds) :). You should see them when there are thousands of them all lined up like little soldiers on a leaf… adorable!
Hi Peta- I would play around with white watercolor and white pencils on scrap paper. Looking at it again – when I look at the real mold in the photo the white stem dominates my attention because it is soooooo white. With your amazing drawing I look at the colorful top and your wonderfully drawn stem. So I am leaning towards leaving your drawing as is.

@doug-milne By the way, this species is called Diachea leucopodia in case you ever want to look it up. 🙂
Wow Peta, such a cool subject. I want to see more of these!
