Hi Sara- I agree with Sam- beautiful page! To start with everything is really nicely rendered. It is still September- you could fit a couple of more interesting found subjects on the page. Great job!
I really like the pinecone! You have a full tonal range. And the drawing is quite good. It is one of those drawings I keep wanting to look at. But the gingko leaf needs the same TLC. Right now it seems flat. I love that you are doing a transition from green to yellow. In my experience the Gingko tree changes from green to yellow very quickly. You’re lucky if you can get a leaf that shows that transition. I’d like to see a more defined drawing before you add the colors. And I’d add a shadow under the leaf. I think it suffers from sitting next to the high contrast pinecone.

Agreed! The pinecone is my favorite here. It has beautiful, crisp detail and nice, deep darks that really make it pop off the page. I also love that you can see the “planes” of each seed wing. I wonder if the ginkgo leaf would benefit from a top layer of bright watercolor? To really make it saturated and bright? In addition to a stronger cast shadow, I think that would bring it up to the level of the pinecone. Maybe also give us a couple of super dark bits on the leaf, on the shadow side of the stem, maybe along one of the edges, just to add some contrast. The crabapples are so very cute. I like that you shaded the ones in the back to create depth within the cluster.
Great page, Sara. Maybe other members of the DB team will have specific feedback but honestly I just think its a great page. 🙂
