Workshop Description:

Study the fundamentals of botanical drawing using graphite pencil, colored pencils, watercolor pencils and watercolor. Drawing plants and flowers starts with observation. Under the supervision of Wendy Hollender and Draw Botanical instructors, students will learn about plant structures and their importance through dissection and comparison. Students will create detailed botanical drawings and sketchbook pages of flowering plants, fruits and seedpods, working directly from the wide variety of tropical plants growing at NTBG. There will be opportunities to work on large compositions and detailed paintings for those with more experience. Lessons in composition will be given to help with the development of larger compositions. We will also study historical botanical illustrations spanning four centuries of the extensive library collection as a way of understanding the tradition and techniques still in use today.

NTBG botanists and staff will be available to help with understanding Botany and other aspects of plants.
No previous drawing experience required during the first week of class.

Class size has been limited due to COVID restrictions. We will continue to monitor this situation. It is possible that more seats will open up. It is also possible that we will have to cancel this event if travel is not possible. Please consider purchasing insurance on your flights and lodging.

Our Drawing Workshops are designed to fit the needs of students of all levels. Workshops are a great way for beginners to receive lots of one-on-one instruction and feedback in a supportive environment. We recommend attending for as many days as possible; the more you immerse yourself, the deeper the learning experience. For the more experienced artist, workshops are a way to make time to focus, continue to advance your skills, and create more-detailed work.

Prerequisites are not required for this workshop, but if you want to gain confidence and build some foundational skills before attending, we recommend completing the Botanical Basics online program.

Instructional classes will be conducted for 5 days each week from 10am to 4pm on the premises at The National Tropical Botanical Garden. We have a large indoor/outdoor classroom for our use, with time to draw outside anywhere in the garden students wish. Students can arrive early and stay late if they want to each day. Optional Open Studio days may be available as well. Please bring your own lunch and snacks to class. We will not provide meals at this workshop.

Instructor is available in the classroom and does daily demonstrations. On off-days, students are free to visit the island, relax at the beach or continue to draw in the garden classroom without instructor supervision.
