Lessons in composition will be given to help with the development of larger compositions.

NTBG botanists and staff will be available to help with garden tours and understanding botany and other aspects of plants. Study the fundamentals of botanical drawing using graphite pencil, colored pencils, watercolor pencils and watercolor. Drawing plants and flowers starts with observation. Under the supervision of Draw Botanical instructors, learn about plant structures and their importance through dissection and comparison.

Create detailed botanical drawings and sketchbook pages of flowering plants, fruits and seedpods, working directly from the wide variety of tropical plants growing at NTBG. There will be opportunities to work on large compositions and detailed paintings for those with more experience. Lessons in composition will be given to help with the development of larger compositions.

No previous drawing experience required during the first week of class.

Our Drawing Workshops are designed to fit the needs of students of all levels. Workshops are a great way for beginners to receive lots of one-on-one instruction and feedback in a supportive environment. For the more experienced artist, workshops are a way to make time to focus, continue to advance your skills, and create more-detailed work.

This is a comprehensive botanical drawing workshop facilitated by Draw Botanical instructors, designed to educate and refine students’ understanding and prowess in botanical drawing of plants and flowers. It will involve using various mediums such as graphite pencils, colored pencils, watercolor pencils, and watercolors.

Prerequisites are NOT required for this workshop, but if you want to gain confidence and build some foundational skills before attending, we recommend completing the Botanical Basics online program, practicing from one of Wendy Hollender’s books, and/or taking a Zoom workshop with us.

Instructional classes will be conducted for 5 days each week from 10 am to 4pm on the premises at The National Tropical Botanical Garden. We have a large indoor/outdoor classroom for our use, with time to draw outside anywhere in the garden you wish. Students can arrive early and stay late if they want to each day. Optional Open Studio days may be available as well. Please bring your own lunch and snacks to class. A full kitchen is of use to us, attached to our classroom. We will not provide meals at this workshop.

Instructors are available in the classroom and do daily demonstrations and trips to the garden. On off-days, students are free to explore the island, relax at the beach, or continue to draw in the garden classroom (without instructor supervision).
