Marie! This looks fantastic. Great job. The skin looks really shiny – true to nectarine. Forgive me if I’m repeating something already said – I think you could blend your cast shadow a bit smoother between that dark dark right next to the fruit and the lighter toning next to it – aim for a smooth transition 🙂 It already looks awesome – just a…[Read more]

Pam gave such great feedback. I love the angles of the stems – they communicate so much character and keep my gaze moving around the page. I appreciate the cast shadows of the stems. You could “knock down” the embossed dots in the core shadow areas on the right hand side of the apples so that they recede a bit and curve away as the apple curves…[Read more]

Hi all, posting a work-in-progress (WIP) to re-introduce myself as one of the Draw Botanical instructors, as I’ve been away from the Art Feed for a bit. I’ll be here again twice a week to comment on all the fantastic art work. Pam, Doug and I had an awesome time joining Wendy, Emet, Wendy’s grandson Leo and the students at Wendy’s Hollengold Farm…[Read more]

Susan, I’m loving these buds. The colors in this composition are very pleasing – those cool greens, with the yellow and gray are such a nice combination. You are showing the overlaps of that cluster of buds really well. Are the large dark spots on the leaf on the left blemishes? Or are they holes?
-
HI Pam – They were supposed to be holes. I’m not happy with them – I feel like I should have left them white and concentrated on the edges. I still need to work on stems as I feel like I’m still not getting the gradual toning!
-
Holes are so tricky! We often counsel in the beginning to just leave blemishes and holes out – ignore them. This is a great drawing and you are really going in the right directions. Your branch, petioles, buds are all looking fantastic. Keep up the good work. Great observation of accurate connections and shapes.

Hi Laurie- Yes. I would use the dark sepia and a dark brown would probably work too. The cast shadow looks really good to me! It starts at the right place. It does not extend to the right as much as some people do, but it definitely grounds the apple to the page (which is the purpose of the cast shadow) and it does not compete with your beautiful apple.

Doug,
Thank you so much for your feedback!A couple questions:
I will add the shadow of the stem!
What color do you use when added a shadow for a stem?
Dark sepia, dark brown, etc? Also, did I bring the cast shadow far enough to the left, underneath the apple? I wasn’t quite sure the best place to start it
Thank you!
