Hi Vicky, I have the same comments I made on the sphere in the last drawing. Lovely toning! I really like the sepals. But I want to see that reflective light darkened and have a smoother transition. Think of the light bouncing off of the table and reflecting on the tomato with a diffused quality.

Hi Vicky, lovely smooth toning! And I like those textures on the twig. Good job! The one thing that you need to work on is the reflective light on the sphere. It is much too light and should have a smoother transition into the dark side of the sphere. It would probably be about a #4 on your gradient scale.

Hi Renata, Lovely drawing! I really like those curling petals in the center left. I think you can go in now with some darker values. Especially where the petals overlap. Those little triangles. The trick will be to choose the right color. I’m thinking a deep purple. Also it is hard to read the highlight on the right side. As it is, it seems a glow…[Read more]

Hi Cathie, Very nice drawing! I love the rich reds! And great observation on the highlights and shadows. I feel those shapes! Good job!

H Cassandra, I think this drawing could use a bit more sense of light on form. I’d like to see some shadows, especially on the leaves behind the flowers, so they will stand out more. Also the paper seems textured. I think you will have better results working in details on smoother paper.

Thank you Katy!! I will definitely do that, I am totally struggling with the light on this because I am (no one look at me) using a photo instead of a proper light set up. Gosh that makes it harder! I really appreciate your advice- it’s so hard to know what to do next as a beginner

Super helpful, thanks so much for all of your encouraging words and advice!!

Thank you, Katy and Vern, for you comments. I see it now—the reflected light looks like a crescent moon! Can never look too carefully.

Thankyou Doug . I appreciate your feedback . I’m new so it’s very helpful . It really helped the the highlight and I do tend to shade on the darker side so I will try that .

Good range of tones on both cylinders Fiona. The areas flanking the highlight could be a little lighter so the highlight is not such a strong stripe. Especially on a branch the highlight will usually vary and have breaks, etc. I think the area around the bottom ring (where a twig broke off) the highlight would fade out there. And/or the highlight…[Read more]

Hi Maureen- this is looking great! I think I would first try earth green to add some toning to the shaded side on the white top part of the gourd. Check out Jill’s recent citrus drawings (she has the sweet gum drawing next to your photo post). Her citrus are both very textured and she captured the form toning so well in addition to retaining b…[Read more]

Hi both, thank you so much for the tips, really helpful. Katy, yes, the flower is white in the centre (very inconvenient) but I think I will have to let go of that. Or could I use some grey in there? I like the idea of using a violet or indigo in order to define the darker areas. Will keep you posted!

Thank you Katy for your comment! After taking some time off this drawing I agree it lacks depth. I thought I was about done, but now I see there is a lot of little improvements needed to finish it!
