As per Doug’s comments, I worked on adding more shadows on the leaves and on the left tulip, however I am not sure if it is very different from the first version of the drawing. I will see you at the webinar.

Great study page Patricia! It is a great idea to follow the progression of a flower! If you are drawing the plant outdoors (rather then a cutting that you can draw indoors) you have to remember how the lighting should be, not as you are seeing outside where there are light sources coming from every direction. A light grey can be used for the…[Read more]

Thanks Doug, the paper was actually smooth but the picture makes it look textured

I’ve been drawing this peony bud every morning for 4 days. It’s amazing how quickly it grows and this morning I was so struck with the mountainous scene that was revealed inside! Still working on getting the shading right. Trying to exercise skills we learned when drawing garlic.

Great drawing Denise! You got nice crisp lines especially considering the paper is so textured!

I tried a drawing using graphite whilst I was on holiday, as it was less to carry with me

Hi Doug, thank you for your comments and I will join you for the webinar. I sent this on the art feed because I couldn’t no longer ´see ´ the drawing and was stuck..

Thank you! It helps me seeing the tones right beside each other. I turn the paper with each layer I do. Will keep working on smooth layers. Thanks for your help.

Hi Chris! All your experimentation and perseverance is paying off! That you can see the clear progression of tones is wonderful! I think #8 could be a little darker and #9 even more. Have you tried turning your paper when you add different layers? It can help achieve better coverage. Keep up the good work!

Welcome back Rita! I like the movement of this piece! A couple of things to consider. I would make the bottom end of the main stem continue down a little further so it does not line up with the bottom of the seed head to it’s right. I would clean up the top edge of the stem that connects to that seed head. It is not as crisp as the rest of the d…[Read more]

Hi Sheila- yes! The pomegranate bud in the lower left helped a lot! With the lone white flower in the middle bottom of the right page, could it have a little bud or flower go behind it? Maybe attached to the little white bud to the flower’s right. Something simple, but I think it needs to have a relationship with something.

Hi Helene! This is wonderful. The view of the tulip on the right is hard to do, but wow, you nailed it! It is sharp and crisp and it does not want me to look anywhere else. The tulip on the left looks more muted so the balance of the composition is off for me. I would also take another look at the toning on the leaves. You have a nice dark shadow…[Read more]

Latest version. Really appreciate the suggestions and open to more, of course. Traveling for three days, so I’ll see what I come across.

Looking forward to the next workshop on drawing roses. They are all in bloom and this one is such a lovely yellow/orange/pink/red mix. I am struggling with shading to give the flower more substance.
