Hi Julie- nice job on the sphere! You could get a little darker on the right side edge and offer more variety transitioning toward the highlight. I would take a kneaded eraser and lighten the area around the highlight too. You are almost there!

Thanks, Doug. I found some interesting branches on today’s walk. It is quite meditative, to draw. Excelsior!

After trying a little sample of one of the orchid canes with masking fluid on the veins, I went ahead a tried adding a little colored pencil on top of it. I think the colored pencil helps to crisp some areas up a bit.

Laurie, funny you should ask, because I wanted to try to paint the canes again, this time using masking fluid on the veins in the papery bits before painting. In the original, I didn’t use masking. I just painted around the veins using a lighter color than the fleshy parts, and then got really dark in some places to make the really light areas l… -

This is such a strong, striking image Rita!!! Love the variety of all those rich, saturated greens!!! The one area I would suggest you look at again is the inside of the long leaf on the left. I would expect more of that portion of the leaf to be in shadow and it does not currently read that way. Beautiful!!!!

Love this Sheila!!!! I have been tempted to do it so many times when I wasn’t happy with certain parts of a drawing! Are you cutting them out with an exact knife? How are you attaching them to the page?
-
@doug Thanks, Doug. I used scissors. I have done a lot of fabric collage and got used to cutting things up :). The idea came back to me with the crabapple drawing that had a very unfortunate mess on one edge. That’s when the scissors came out! These aren’t glued down yet because I want to draw in the faint shadow they cast. I use an archival glu…[Read more]

Yes, overlapping is on the way. Thanks, Vern!

Thanks for sharing your process Sheila!

You’re welcome. I really like the Lineco glue. No smell, not sticky. Easy to wipe off, too.

Yes this process is so great – thank you for sharing.

You’re welcome. The Lineco flue is so easy to use!

Hi Marina, Leaves and stems often don’t get the attention the showy flowers do. So it is great that you have decided to focus on the this aspect of the plant first. Nice controlled toning! Something about the left leaf bothers me. I think the curve of the back side of the leaf could be defined more. I’m not sure what is happening there.

Hi Cynthia,
Nice to see you move into more colors. As you do, try to keep that idea of the sphere. Where is the light source? Where would the highlight be? Think about the core shadow. -

You have been busy Fanny! The cylinder on the right is the most successful. The highlight could shift to the right a little on all of the cylinders, but it looks good on the branches. On that cylinder on the right the toning to the right of the highlight gets dark pretty quick. I would lighten the area to the right of the highlight and work on…[Read more]

Thank you Doug for your kind comment! I could see some of the toning issues but didn’t realize those highlights were not in the right place. I really appreciate getting your experienced advice.

Thanks, Pam. Unfortunately, those are the only morels we’ve found so far and then we ate them with a few wild oyster mushrooms. We’ll keep looking:) -

Those pits are great! I didn’t find any morels this year :(. I think the dying elm tree at my usual spot is fully dead now.

The colors are nice and bright Cynthia! The fruits could use more darker toning. The fruit on the right looks good, and has nice form to it, but I would expect to see a shadow on it cast from the fruit on the left rather than the large highlight I am seeing. I would also expect that pair of leaves to be casting a shadow on both fruits. The cast…[Read more]

Thanks, Ethel. I admire the bumblebees, the way they zip around. Unfortunately, this one wasn’t moving. -

Thank you, Katy. The back side is folded, I tried to show that with toning.

I agree! I keep collecting more to draw, even though they are “just branches.” Nicely done study.
