The colors are nice Karen. The cast shadow is dominating and I would lighten it. Also take care to do smooth toning on the shadow. Shadows generally are darkest closest to the subject and fade as they move away.

Nice work Bonnie! The right hand sides of the two lower horizontal sections could use a little more dark toning. More like the horizontal section on the top. If the ribbon was shiny your highlight would be correct, if not shiny lighten the areas flanking the highlight.

You have done a wonderful job on these apples – twice!!!! The patterning helps establish some form, but I would add some toning to emphasize it! As I thought, without the heavy cast shadow that was on your original drawing this version could use more toning. Are you going to do a cast shadow?

Such a sweet drawing! It looks like this flower is a shy one. I like the way the details of the reproductive parts grab the viewer’s attention. It is so hard to draw flowers as they droop. I’d like to see less linear work and more toning to create the shapes of the petals. Gradiate the toning from the line edge more, so the line is not so obvious.…[Read more]

Lovely! It is such a challenge drawing a white flower on white paper. You have done a great job! I love the colors you have incorporated into the grays of the shadows.

After I sprouted my bean and drew a few stages I planted it in a small pot, and now out in my garden!

Also, I really like the still life you have set up here. Inspiring.

It’s so beautiful, Pam. I wonder if you’ve posted again and I’ll get to it as I scroll. I wonder if there could be some touch more darks in the inside of that top curled leaf. Also wonder if it would be permissible for some bit of fluff to be drawn blowing across the page – one got free? Wind borne? All the other elements you wrote about I think…[Read more]

Doug, thank you. I don’t think I will do a cast shadow. It probably would be better for me to start over. Also, I just deleted the daffodil and replaced it with a photo with further changes. Will go back and see if I can change the direction of the lower petal as suggested.
Appreciate all your suggestions. Again thanks, Mary Jo

Good work, Yahya. This is a very nice leaf portrait. I like your colours and the way you have shown shaded area on the outer left and to the right of the main vein. Your shading looks nice and soft. Your cast shadow is also done nice and softly. I think the cast shadow would come out a bit more to the right of the right leaf edge. On your next…[Read more]

Hi Karen- the thing to remember when drawing at night is that shadows are much darker and you have to make adjustments so the shadows don’t dominate the drawing. As an example your shadow here is way too dark (even though it was probably that dark in reality). I am missing the toning on your tulip that would establish it’s form. For a white flo…[Read more]

Hi Karen- roots are fun, but they are a challenge. Remember that each root should individually have a range of toning to convey it’s cylindrical form in addition to toning the roots so you are establishing which is in front, back, in between and where they overlap each other. There are so many different types of roots and you will get to try d…[Read more]

That’s helpful. Thank you. Will try to adjust this drawing.

Earth green pencil for toning – what I think Doug meant

Hi Karen – if it weren’t for the stem the skin looks like an onion to me. The colors and the thin pattern lines give me that feel. I think you could use a range of dark and mid-range tones to emphasize the apples form. As I said on your petal posting, the shadow should be much lighter and fade lighter as it moves away from the subject.

Thanks Doug. This object was from my imagination and I thought is morphed into an apple but apparently not!

Beautiful page Wendy! Love all the detail on the bulb! I would add toning on the bulb to help convey it’s form. Bulbs are fun – aren’t they?
-
Thanks Doug. I was thinking of your so very pretty Amaryllis bulb and this daffodil bulb looks like a little monster in comparison. It will be fun to add some more toning as you suggest. I appreciate your encouragement.

Katy. thank you for your encouragement. We have lesser celandine, also called fig buttercup, growing everywhere right now. It is quite invasive but beautiful. Just took Wendy’s and Sam’s workshop on Leaf Clusters and this is the result. Wonderful teachers !
