Love this one, Bonnie. Great colour mixing with your watercolour. I think you can still go darker on your shaded side. Bring in some brown – and looks like you can pump up the saturation of the colour at base of the skin – the part where it reads brighter like a red in the photograph? Also, think about that paper like quality of the skin while you…[Read more]

Yes, I agree with you about the values. Yellows are so tricky for me. I try for the translucent quality, but then itโs pale. Iโll work on your suggestions. Maybe some watercolor. Thanks for the feedback! -

Now that is a handsome twig! It feels so solid. I like the differing textures on the inner and outer bark.

This is really looking spherical! but I’m getting an outline. Observe and think about the shadow directly under the tomato. I call it the “sit down shadow” It shouldn’t come up the side so far and should sort of “puddle” slightly under the tomato.

Hi Katherine, such a cheery drawing! I want to see some more darks. A cast shadow on the apple under those right hand leaves would make a nice separation. Be careful not to have a white line between the apples and the leaves.

The sliced pear is really beautiful! It has that style you have that I love. However somehow you seem to have lost the shape and coloration of the pear on the left. It is mostly working until you get to what I think is the cast shadow of the other pear. You still need to indicate the shapes in the shadow. And the color suggests the pear is maybe a…[Read more]

Hi Katherine, You have a very interesting style. I find your drawings very pleasing. Especially this one. Rather restful. I like the simple bold shapes. And gentle colors. Also beautiful line work on the fringing under the cap and at the bottom of the stem. Very nice.

Hi Ellery, Yes, a beauty. Lovely to look at! These color scales look so great on Kraft paper! And such a good resource for you as you do other drawings.

Beautiful drawing as it is, Sheila!
Maybe I would bring in more darks in the leaves. The flower, stem and leaves are of a piece with a limited value scale. However, the bulb having such rich darks and saturated color, it is stealing the show. -

I think my favorite thing about this is the wonky stem with leaves shooting out in all directions. Oh, and also the beautiful curling petal.

Hi Camille, You have such a way with flowers! Beautiful! I love the petals curling on themselves! The only thing that bothers me at all is the position of the smaller bud. I sort of wish it were positioned further away from the flower.

Good work, Bonnie. Excellent studying. Good colour work. Keep working to get those range of tones – highlights, midtones, shaded/grisaille tones.
