Such a great drawing! I’m glad you liked using the dark indigo. I always like to throw an unexpected color in to my drawings.

@katylyness I really enjoyed your indigo idea in seed head and leaf interior. Thanks for your tips!

@doug-milne I took my time with the seed head, used tracing paper for measuring then enjoyed observing patterns and lights and darks. Hope you guys are keeping warm, finally out of the minus 30 here so maybe spring isn’t too far away!

@vern it was a fun project, so many snowy “goldy” specimens to choose from in our yard and by the river

Thanks so much Sam. I’m reading Braiding Sweetgrass based on your recommendation. I’m loving every word!

I love sketching and shading– and it happens that shading turns into a monochrome study. Lucille

Nice Lucille! This is beautifully rendered! As you continue on with it I would be sure to add more dark toning where there are overlaps and those “V” areas.

@doug-milne Doug, Thank you for the feed back. Question: Have I done too much shading (apart from the dark toning you mention) to proceed with a water color and color pencil? I love shading so much, I don’t know when to stop. Can I still proceed with color? Thank you!
-
Hi Lucille- no – you haven’t gone too far. You could still go darker in spots as we discussed. Be sure to leave your highlights! Is this color (red-violet?) you used good for your grisailles layer? If the flower is a deep red, you could even be a little more saturated with the shading.

Also good at this stage to think of the lighting on the whole form, ie the oval-esque form made by all the individual petals.

Hi Bonnie- with your two spheres I see a lot of mid-range toning, but not the darker tones. The area surrounding your highlight could be lightened also. The reflected highlight appears to be on the table surface rather on the sphere/fruit. The cast shadow should be dark next to the subject and fade away as it moves away from the subject. The…[Read more]

Hi Bonnie, Look like spheres to me! Nice sensitive toning. I’d suggest you add a bit more of a core shadow to really round them out. And keep in mind that reflective light.

This drawing is so great! I’m not sure how to define the feeling it evokes. Very winter! Almost achingly so.

I guess this little guy is just looking for a place to put down roots. Such an interesting shape! I Iike your colors and full range of value. You should now think about the underlying shapes. I’m missing a highlight. Would there be more that one? Where would they be? What are the underlying shapes?

Hi Marina, I love that you are adding more colors to your drawings of leaves. Also the fact that you have not used one dark line to define the veins is impressive. However, now I think just a few dark lines would work. Only near the mid rib and mainly because they would work well in conjunction with your embossing. Don’t over do it though. Just a touch.
