This has a nice, soft touch, and I like the line marks on the petals. Beautiful blending of colours.

Looks like a good stage 1, Camille. Remember to leave your highlight areas as you build your colours.

Wow Wendy you did it! My tree is definitely an elliptic yellowwood (Ochrosia elliptica) that I found growing on the edge of a sand dune area at a beach just north of Brisbane. It all fits! So thank you for you help. By the way, what app did you use to identify it?

Beautiful, Diane. You could give us more highlights throughout the length of the branch, and increase your shading/darks on the right to give more volume.
-
Looks good – it’s hard to see #2 in this photo but transitions look good.

Good start. I think your highlight would move to the right and up a touch. Keep working to show a range of values in your oranges. Try making a tone bar to work out your grisaille to local colour to highlight range.

Katy Lyness has a great orange (clementines) drawing on her page. It’s on Kraft paper, which is very different than white paper, but you can see a great example of texture and highlights for inspiration and ideas.

1) How shading and highlighting can make a leaf dance in the air.
2) darkening areas without going too muddy
3) Still want to learn how to make stem more real. -

I have been trying to understand what enhances elements of the flower. The type here has been inserted afterward in Photoshop.

During the last Art feed discussion, I was inspired to try an amaryllis. Here are 3 stages I observed.

I like how smooth and delicate your drawings are- such nice, soft blended colour. Love the cast shadow on the leaf. I think your stem could benefit from a stronger highlight, more contrast.

This amazing botanical is either beating up my heart, or making it stop. As a medical doctor, which do you think? I have never seen this red colored pod. is it a tree or a shrub? I just took a pic of your drawing and put it in my plant ID app. Here is what it came up with: Elliptic yellowwood, a species of Ochrosia which is native to Australia.…[Read more]

Cadmium yellow lemon is what I meant to say for brightening the highlights.

Hi Rita,
Now that is a lively flower! I like the colors you are using! That purply pink really glows. I think what this flower needs is more pinpoint dark darks. Use an indigo in the triangles where the leaves converge and the shadow under the flower. Just in the darkest darks. You could use the same color to carefully pop the petals. Use a…[Read more] -

Hi Lucy, This apple looks great! You really are getting good at this! I would smooth the transition of the reflective light as it goes into the body of the apple. It looks a bit thin and sharp. Carefully take an eraser to it. Also I would extend the stem shadow and lighten and soften it as it moves away from the stem.

Hi Carol, I was just playing with my pencils to answer you better. Using the colors in Wendy’s set, I would use Permanent Olive Green as my grisaille. Then go in with Chrome Oxide green for the darks. You could use Chrome Oxide as your grisaille, but but unless you are careful, it could go too dark. Best to keep that for the darks. After you get t…[Read more]
