Hi Sheila- the dried stamens seem fine. What don’t you like about them? I think in stead of adding a shadow to the section, I would remove the shadows from the seeds. The shadows are saying that those items are sitting on a surface, but all your other components are not. Just a thought. It is a beautiful page!

Hi Ingrid- I love how you have positioned the subject on the page! There are areas where petals and stems overlap where I would go back in with some darker toning to delineate the overlaps and shadows. Great job!

Hi Ingrid, I agree with Doug, a some more darks will really may this lovely drawing come into its own. The composition is quite nice. I love the jaggity edges!

Thank you so much for your feedback @dougmilne and @katylyness !

I’m still working on the section. Thinking of getting rid of the dried stamens on the left of the section. Also, I think the section needs more toning on the shadow side. Open to any suggestions:)

Hi Sheila! I was just watching the webinar (which I always learn soooo much from btw), and I’m at the part where this drawing is being discussed. It sounded like you are regretting adding the seeds. I just want to let you know that I love the seeds. And I think that adding a darker riper pomegranate in the back like Wendy suggested will make t…[Read more]

Doug, thanks for that thought. Yes, maybe better for everything to float. I’m really experimenting with this. Posting the next addition:)
-
@pgthompson thanks, Pam. I really appreciate your feedback. I have added a ripe pomegranate. Not finished yet, but posting it. I like your idea about elements all around! Thanks!

You are a rockstar, Sheila.

That makes sense. Yes, when I look at the drawing I can see how it might need to be broken up, basically to soften the lines a bit. Leaves and loose berries could work for sure. I was being very faithful in rendering the shape of the branch I had cut etc. I’ve since started to learn to be a bit less strict with myself; if I miss or add a leaf etc,…[Read more]

@pat schiebold I used two colors mixed together for my watercolor: madder and cadmium orange -

What red watercolor did you use. Mine all have a pink tone

Thanks everybody for your comments and suggestions. Pomegranates are possibly my favorite plant to draw. I’ll be ready for another round hopefully next August!

I don’t know, Machi. I find this drawing fascinating. It may have been harder to draw, but worth the effort. It feels like potential energy. The promise of things to come. Those little feathery petals chatting amonst themselves. I can imagine a diptych with the open flower as the second piece.

Beautiful point of view, and it feels like I could reach out and touch it.

Always wanted to draw a protea, but this one was not the best subject to draw because of the closed shape which forced me to draw inside of the flower. Next time, I will pick an easier protea to draw.

Beautiful drawing, Machi. The feathery quality you got on the purple ends is wonderful.

Yes, Jane! Very striking! One of those I can’t look away from. I don’t know if it is the colors or the composition or a combination of everything, but whatever it is it really works!

So Beautiful! I think you just need to add some darker areas in the shadows, especially where the elements overlap.

Hi Amanda, so many great things about this drawing: the shine you get on the leaves and berries, the details of the stem, the rich colors! It is quite nice. My main suggestions for improvement would concern the composition. I would have eliminated the bottom stem and instead attached a leaf or placed a few loose berries somewhere for balance. That…[Read more]

Beautiful use of what we call “atmospheric perspective” Those lighter, flatter background leaves receding nicely and the sharper contrast of the foreground bits pushing forward! Good job! I also love the spring green and the way you have transitioned from green to red.
