Good job, Pamela. Do another one! Try propping the tomato up on something for a different view – some folks prop it up with an eraser, or a napkin, whatever works to hold it upright and make a little still life subject for yourself. Get your single light source shining on it from your left shoulder area (or right if you’re a lefty). Try to tone…[Read more]

Looking good – check it out and see if on the top of that cylinder the edge closest to us looks darker when you light it.

I love the edge of that leaf! I just posted a magnolia leaf and my edge looks outlined and to save my life, I couldn’t figure out how to make it look more natural. I’m going to take a close look at your technique. Your painting is going to be beautiful.

Beautiful! Everything swirls & moves the eye. It’s such an interesting composition to observe.

Your toning is so smooth and the colors are lovely! Looks great. I love the addition of slices at the bottom. (Just started the course; haven’t gotten to that lesson yet).

I want a BLT!! I love the composition you created with the missing fruits! The top right empty space is nicely balanced by the tomatoes missing on the left side and at the bottom.. My eyes move all over the page! It’s a very pretty painting.

Thank you, Sam! I’ll keep practicing from different angles.

It looks really great. The texture on the stems looks especially great, and I really like the highlights.

Trying out Fluid 100 HP 100% cotton WC paper, since I am having a difficult time with the paper developing a “nap”. I have this tiny block to test out the paper for WC. It seems to be working well for this purpose.

I always just stick to Wendy and Vern’s paper recommendations – glad you are experimenting!

These look great Sinead, nice work. You can give a bit more info on some of your stems – make me feel that they are cylindrical and that they don’t have the same width/diameter for their whole length. Thumbs up! Great overlaps studies.
-
Thank you for the feedback Sam! I’ll add more detail to those stems

Thanks Vern 🙂

Really like this, lovely colours, your paper challenges aside!

Also, I have noticed a little white line dividing two parts of the drawing, like there the red tomato meets the green stem. Why is that happening and what do I do about it?

Here is another try at a tomato. This one has deep cracks in it. I have noticed that I am having difficulty with the paper shredding a bit after I get lots of layers on there. It is sort of a very soft ‘nap’ of little fibers coming up. What am I doing wrong?

Do you have a Muji crank sharpener? They really make a huge difference. The long sharp pencils allow us to draw softer and build up the layers. Do you use Wendy’s cold press paper? Looks like you are a lefty, yes? I’d lighten that shadow, it’s too overwhelming – we want it to be a supportive player – not the main one. If you use watercolour make…[Read more]

Those cracks look great. I like how you get a little peek into the flesh of the tomato through the lovely cracks. I’m anxious to here what others have to say about the paper and the soft fibers coming up. I had this problem too when I used Stonehenge legion HP paper. I think I have too heavy of a hand for it.

Good work Lisa – looks like you are really getting it. Don’t forget the highlights on the side shoots too!

Did you make a value scale like on page 26 of Wendy’s Botanical Drawing in Color book? You can hold it up to a drawing to help check if you are getting a good range of values in your object. I think you can still push these orbs a bit. 🙂
-
Sam, thanks so much for the feedback! Yes, I made a value scale card, so I just need not to be so timid 🙂 Will keep at it.
