Trying out Fluid 100 HP 100% cotton WC paper, since I am having a difficult time with the paper developing a “nap”. I have this tiny block to test out the paper for WC. It seems to be working well for this purpose.

I always just stick to Wendy and Vern’s paper recommendations – glad you are experimenting!

Don’t forget your highlights on your leaves! Such a great shape. Nice edges. 🙂

These look great Sinead, nice work. You can give a bit more info on some of your stems – make me feel that they are cylindrical and that they don’t have the same width/diameter for their whole length. Thumbs up! Great overlaps studies.

Here is another try at a tomato. This one has deep cracks in it. I have noticed that I am having difficulty with the paper shredding a bit after I get lots of layers on there. It is sort of a very soft ‘nap’ of little fibers coming up. What am I doing wrong?

Also, I have noticed a little white line dividing two parts of the drawing, like there the red tomato meets the green stem. Why is that happening and what do I do about it?

Do you have a Muji crank sharpener? They really make a huge difference. The long sharp pencils allow us to draw softer and build up the layers. Do you use Wendy’s cold press paper? Those cracks look great. I like how you get a little peek into the flesh of the tomato through the lovely cracks. I’m anxious to here what others have to say about the paper and the soft fibers coming up. I had this problem too when I used Stonehenge legion HP paper. I think I have too heavy of a hand for it.

Did you make a value scale like on page 26 of Wendy’s Botanical Drawing in Color book? You can hold it up to a drawing to help check if you are getting a good range of values in your object. I think you can still push these orbs a bit. 🙂

I hope this added toning helps separate the different tomatoes. I’m glad we didn’t eat them last night.

It looks really great. The texture on the stems looks especially great, and I really like the highlights.

I want a BLT!! I love the composition you created with the missing fruits! The top right empty space is nicely balanced by the tomatoes missing on the left side and at the bottom.. My eyes move all over the page! It’s a very pretty painting.
