Dear classmates, don’t worry, I’m not going to post daily journal pages, but did want to say, the Sketchbook Revival is free and really fun. I recommend it. And, Wendy is teaching on it soon.

Thanks Vern. It’s fun and maybe becoming another good habit, like botanical drawing. I loved seeing all the work from Hawaii! Wow!

Hi Maureen- I really like the composition and all the information you are giving us about how the fruit clusters emerge from the bract. Beautiful rendering!

Same paper- I was trying to do a lighter touch as I know part of the reason my saturation is so intense is that I get rid of all the texture, but also then I feel like it gets rid of some of the detail and highlights- I will keep layering this one and see if I can get the right feel I want- thanks for your feedback!

Hi Rita- first I just want to make sure you are using a hot press watercolor paper. It looks like a smooth surface so I assume you are. Next, you said you are putting watercolor over a color pencil base. You can do that, but the majority of how we work is laying the watercolor down (after applying Grisaille toning with a color pencil) and than…[Read more]

Thanks, Doug. Yes, eating healthy and supplementing with comfort food, like chocolate or potato chips! See you at the online meeting. Hope you’re all well! -

Yes Rita, that looks better! The column now looks like it is coming out of the well area rather than sitting on top.

This is a great page Rita! It is good to see you pushing yourself and trying a range of subjects with much success! Even with study pages start to consider the composition. I like grouping subjects that have noticeable similarities. On your page, the brown stem with bud doesn’t harmonize with the other subjects because of it’s color and also bec…[Read more]

We can tell you are eating healthy! Beautiful job on these strawberries Sheila! It is not easy to get that highlight around the individual seeds! A masterful job! It is snowing here this morning with a prediction of 2-4” after no snow for months.

Thanks Sheila! I found out later that this is a very invasive tree. It has so many interesting parts a lot of us were inspired to draw it. They call it the Autograph tree because you can write on the leaves and when you see the trees out in public they appear to be covered in graffiti from people writing on the leaves.

Hi Douglass- I thought that is what it was. In the future rotate your flower a little so your view does not have the tepal line up with the stem or if you decide that view of the flower is the best than you can “fudge” your drawing so the two parts don’t line up.

Hi Liesbeth- see some comments on your other posting. The shadow is looking better on this as it’s much lighter, but it is still too large. It should be darkest near the fruit and quickly transition to lighter tones. It does not have to extend so far. As I said on the previous post the shadow is just a suggestion to ground the subject and convey t…[Read more]
