This is a native hawaiian palm fruit called Loulu. Glad you like the page! -

This is really beautiful [no surprises there], and a great worksheet to learn from. For example, how you varied the angle of the stem on the green plum which adds much to the composition, and variety when compared to the blue plum below. Also your practicing basic values, shapes, etc. I take it you made it to Hawaii? All the best to you, wherever…[Read more]

Gorgeous Wendy! Even after seeing this in person it is hard to believe that this morning glory type flower turns into this dried specimen! I love the composition of this page!

Hi Ginny- my apologies for the delay in my response. I have been going back and forth and trying to compare this page with your previous posting and I have been struggling to see a difference. It is possible that it is due to the quality of the photographic images. I am assuming you followed Vern’s advice and lightened some of the roots in f…[Read more]

Hi Maureen- I envy your foot of snow! We had a very mild winter here in the Northeast. Your drawing reminded me to go out and check on my hellebores and many of them are in bloom. They are one of my favorites and they are great subjects to draw. Beautiful harbingers of Spring and the deer (usually) don’t eat them as the leaves are said to be p…[Read more]

Thanks Doug! It was my first time seeing these in bloom when we visited Vancouver Island. Still covered in a foot of snow here on the prairies so it was a joy to sketch this little bundle of colour, Really enjoy your help on these projects.

Hi Sheila- I think the cut section is a nice addition and it fits nicely into the composition. Great job!

Ok, I know this is weird, but I wanted to draw the tuber sliced open. That’s it with this plant for now. It’s in the mountains and everyone needs to stay inside or just a quick trip for groceries. I’m very fond of this plant though. Next time, more of the flowers!

Thanks!- and no problem about the name- i found those leaves outside on the ground and they are almost a grey color so I think I will leave them as is- I will keep working on the flower- i had used more watercolor on this flower than I had before, and so sort of challenging for me but I am going back to work on it with your suggestions- thank you…[Read more]

Hi Maureen- beautiful hellebore! There are a couple of spots I would add some dark toning. The front facing leaf to the right of the bloom seems like it should have a shadow on it from the bloom. I would also tone the bottom left petal. I think toning the left side of that petal would be appropriate and also express that the bloom curves around. Great job!

Your comments on light source is really interesting – I was at a table , bright outside Morning light from the left, but not from behind me. This is a great idea with the artificial environment to eliminate light and I can see that I need to be more vigilant at actually setting the correct environment.
I can totally see what you are saying about…[Read more] -

I’ve done this flower in pieces on small pages, so yes, I like your idea. A study for a larger page with all the parts. The wild pigs, jabalíes, dig them up at night. - Load More
