    • Hi Sheila! When I first saw this I thought you had taken a picture of fruit you were going to draw and this was a teaser for a future drawing. Beautiful!!!! You have really captured their respective colors and textures. Really nice job on the toning, the highlights and the cast shadows. Everything! So simple, but just superb! I hope you ate more…[Read more]

    • Doug, wow! Thank you! Oh, I eat way more, no snacking, but good 3 meals. We’re walking an hour a day on the balcony (35 feet, L-shaped), and yoga. But it’s not the amount of movement we were getting. Anyhow, we’re definitely on board with the safety restrictions. Hope you’re all well. See you online Monday!
      • love it – so beautiful!

      • Thanks, Hendrika

    • This was a quick study of a home grown tomato. No stress and enjoyed attempting it.

    • I overworked parts of this as I struggled to get the light right on the leaves. It could be totally wrong anyway on the bottom leaf. Also struggled to get the right colour so I used watercolour as well. I think I was far too ambitious with this attempt but I did learn a lot trying.

      • This is so well done Dora! You really captured this big, juicy tomato!!!! Your drawing has so much going for it! The toning and the highlights are very successful as is the color selection and saturation! My one comment would be that you could lighten the shadow and have it angle back a little more. You enjoyed working on this and it shows!!!!

      • Thanks Doug. I realised about tte shadow after I read one of your comments on an apple when you talked about the light source. I’m still after all this time having issues with light source but I think I’m at least becoming more aware about leaving highlight now. I must have a mental block or stubborn brain !!!

      • Hi Dora- this drawing is bringing me back to Hawaii! There were Hibiscus everywhere! Your rendering is really well done and I love the details on the buds. I think the leaves look good and you could have done even less detail on them if you wanted because the star of the page is the flower. The flower is beautiful and the colors are great, but it…[Read more]

      • Thanks Doug. I will make these changes. Will be giving this drawing to my sister in law as she lives in Greece and is here for a short time. This hibisbus is growing in a pot on my mother-in-law’s deck so hopefully it can remind her of Australia. What colours do I use for the toning. Would the sepia be too dark?

      • Hi Dora- sorry I missed your question. Whatever you used worked! The center looks great now. See my note on your new post about the shadow from the column.

    • Hi Carol- this is a really beautiful page! You have truly captured the hellebore’s various parts in your rendering and color choices! There are a couple of areas that I would look at again. The flower on the top right that is facing the right side of the page seems like it should have some darker toning added. A lot of the flower is facing away f…[Read more]

      • Carol, this is beautiful! The leaves! All the views of the flowers!!!

    • Thank you Hendrika. I was trying for that!

    • I love the papery feel of the bulb

    • Unfortunately the bloom has gone by. This part took too long!
I’ll try to find another one, when I can get out of the house;~(

    • Yeah! That would be bad! Thanks!

    • Hi Liz- I am sending a couple of pictures from Wendy’s book that illustrate the angle of the shadow and shading a sphere. The shadow reads a little dark in the picture and yours doesn’t have to be that dark. You can also see on these pages the range of toning on the sphere. You have a lot of mid-range tone and it could use more transition from the…[Read more]

    • Hi Ginny- good job on the hyacinth. I especially like the roots and the flower bud! I think the bulb and some of the leaves could benefit from further toning. You have dark toning on the left side and it needs to continue across the bottom of the bulb. The leaf on the right needs some dark toning on the inside, which is in view. The “V” where the…[Read more]

    • Doug, this is my sphere revisted. Is it better?

      • Ginny, this is wonderful, the bulb so transparent and the greens coming right out! So glad to see you online!

      • And the flower head, too! (I missed it because I didn’t scroll up enough.)

    • Doug, I don’t understand what you mean by angling the shadow back more. Is the shadow too wide at the top of the reflected highlight.? I,m working on the toning but am having a hard time. Why would I lighten the area around the highlight more than it is. I understand about no distinct circle. I’ll send you another try. Thanks.
