Hi Douglass – this is an interesting subject with nice movement. You could use more toning on the undersides of some of the leaves. The bottom leaf on the left for example. I am confused by how the leaves are attached and it would be helpful if you could submit a photo.

What a nice contrast to the more traditional style of your other Jathropa drawing Helene! The shadows really make it look like the leaf is sitting up off the page. I don’t see a shadow along the right side of the stem where I would expect to see one. Nice job!

Looks great Helene! I think the shadows are well placed and are a good tone! It is a beautifully rendered leaf!

Hi Rita- the toned down highlights look better. Do you have any plans for adding more details?

Hi Rita- the additional toning has made a difference! The bottom of the rose now appears to be sitting on the sepals and the various layers are nicely defined. The two lowest petal rollovers seem like they could use some highlight. Some other details would good on the page. Nice job!

Thank you… it’s a weird branch but I loved the challenge. I still have it. I’ll send a photo.
-
Hi Douglass- thanks for sending the photo! When I look at it I see the veins on the off shoots continue onto the vein of the primary stalk, which is what I would expect, but don’t see on your drawing. I think changing that where applicable would eliminate the confusion I had.

Hi Doug! Love this!! “See” you soon.

As I worked on this- big bright orange flecks of pollen fell on the petals and looked great, but I am not quite sure how to achieve- I was almost thinking of just dusting some of the orange directly on and maybe dotting with water to see if it would work- i need to do some experimenting – any suggestions?
-
I also thought that might be a way to help the green detail on the petals look less like leaves
-
Hi Rita- I think adding pollen on the petals would be hard to pull off and it could just confuse things, but I admire your desire to experiment. It certainly would be worth a try, but I would experiment on a separate piece of paper before trying on a finished drawing. I was wondering if you tried blending parts of the pink edge and white edge on…[Read more]

Thank you!- I will work on it some more- I have been a little afraid to tone down the highlights because of my history of going overboard with the color, but I am going to continue as you suggest

well, I go on with my Jatropha leaves , In this one, I embossed the contour and it¡s surely more artistic composition than a real botanical drawing . Would you call it “naturalist art”? I struggled a lot on shadows

well, I hadn’t thought of that but now that you mention it , yes. fine eye. actually I started the series with this one. As I have always liked this plant , a few months ago I planted one in my yard. and I thought it was a nice leaf to draw. The young plant has only this shape of leaves but there is a grown one in a park in the town and when I…[Read more]

Thank you, Doug. I appreciate very much your comments. Your drawings are so awesome. Well, I am not so sure just now. I first thought about doing one drawing with the different stages and the flower which is so spectacular too. you will get it any time. now I just want to do different drawings and see what happens, so I am in the process . But…[Read more]

Thank you so much. Now that I’ve been away from it for a day or so, I can actually see what you are saying re the shape of the ellipse and yes, the ellipse in the graphite nut does look much closer to that in the actual acorn. You are right also about determining how close to the real a rendered object is. Lots to think about, and thanks so much…[Read more]

Hi Mary- because of the shadow on the acorn in the photograph it is hard to see it’s shape, but from what is visible the actual acorn appears to have more of a flat top and straight sides than what you have drawn. Both the graphite and colored acorns you have drawn are an oval shape. I think the elliptical top of the graphite acorn is close to t…[Read more]
