Thanks so much, this is very helpful, especially since I find this branch so non-reflective that it’s hard to really ‘see’ the highlight. At the same time, I just love it, the texture and shape of this branch, esp. when seen in person, make it seem almost paleolithic. Thanks again.

Vern, thanks for the suggestions. I’m trying to get a little more toning a variety of green. I will get back to it in April and then I’ll study petals, too.

Hi Sheila- enriching the greens as Vern suggested has given the stems and leaves some presence and made the flowers “pop” more! Nice work!

Great composition! Love the sprinkling of those tiny seeds😁

Great start Isabel! It is a beautiful page! The one thing I would suggest is to work on the shading a little bit. I think there are a couple of places on the cones and the catkins where adding some more shading would help clarify which cone/catkin is in front/behind and also enhance their forms. It is going to be an amazing book!

Following Vern’s advice, color of the fruit fibers was made lighter (yellower) and the edge of the cut surface was lightened to make it more distinct from the outside.

Thanks so much for your advice Vern. Was hoping to do a nice job on this one and gifting it to my friends who will be gifting me so many of their beautiful flowers to draw. Honestly their garden is like the botanical gardens.

Thank you so much, Doug, your information is so very helpful, can’t say that enough. In terms of the measurements, now that I look at the photo, there does seem to be a marked difference between the size of the branch and the sketch, especially in terms of width/diameter. I’ll recheck my measurements; they were done with a digital caliper, so…[Read more]

I need some help to add depth to the flower. Having trouble deciding how to add some shadow which I think it needs.

I had a very difficult time getting the quality I have on the leaves, onto the flower petals- it was a combination of water color and pencil – I know something isn’t right but can’t quite figure out how to remedy

Hi Beth- this is a good practice page. The one thing I notice on your cherries and leaves is that most of them are outlined. The area of a subject that is on the highlight side is not going to have a dark edge like it would on the shaded side. The two leaves in the middle of the page are your most successful. Of those two the leaf on top could use…[Read more]
