I’m still working on a rendering that has the kind of color saturation that the object has. I think I came closer this time than in Lesson 1, but still not there. Also, the highlight is off compared to the live sample, but I moved the acorn several times while rendering the color, msaybe that’s part of the problem. The circular/eliptical area commonly seen on the base of the nut where it attaches to the cuplet — that area actually did look quite round when I did the charcoal drawing. But it looks more elliptical in the photo. Do you think the circle as drawn throws the perspective off? I worked on that quite a while, still wondering if the perspective looked ‘off’. Thanks for your help.
Hi Mary- because of the shadow on the acorn in the photograph it is hard to see itโs shape, but from what is visible the actual acorn appears to have more of a flat top and straight sides than what you have drawn. Both the graphite and colored acorns you have drawn are an oval shape. I think the elliptical top of the graphite acorn is close to the top of the actual acorn as shown in the photograph. I think the elliptical top on the colored acorn tilts forward more. They both are well done and could work. The question is if they are the best representation of your subject. The color choice and saturation look very good!
Thank you so much. Now that I’ve been away from it for a day or so, I can actually see what you are saying re the shape of the ellipse and yes, the ellipse in the graphite nut does look much closer to that in the actual acorn. You are right also about determining how close to the real a rendered object is. Lots to think about, and thanks so much for the clarification, very helpful.

Mary, I agree with Doug about the shape here. And I think the graphite version of the little attachment bit is more successful. When you tilt a circle shape backward in space, it becomes more of an elliptical shape, like you have in the graphite drawing. You did get some nice color and saturation here. Acorns are a fun subject, and it’s fun to do several different ones over and over to practice! ๐

Thanks so much to you both, I think ellipses take a lot of practice to get them right, and in accordance with the object being rendered.
