Thanks very much Vernin for all your helpful comments. I am back doing my PhD time so unfortunately not a lto of time! I am going to have to hold the course for a while in a couple of days. I will try and get my hibiscus flower pattern done and posted before then! I also just had the botanical drawing book delivered so I hope to still get some… -

Thank you! I’ll try that!

Good start here but now get some more tones between your darkest and then the mid tones, and even close in on the highlight more making it smaller!

You are doing great. Glad you are enjoying the lessons. Try to get a more gradual toning from your shadow tones to your mid tones and then your light tones. It will get easier when you do a wider branch or other form!

I was trying complimentary colors. The green here uses the purple for the shading. Although red is the compliment, I was thinking that the red/blue in a purple plays to the blue/yellow in the green. Yellow is going to be the hard one to darken.

yes it is relaxing, and now you can try some color blends where you add in an additional color to get darker shadows. The shadow color can vary depending on the hue of the color. Dark sepia is one option but might be too strong on lighter colors. What darker colors would you use for these blends do you think?

This feather is from a parrot, they are wild here. -

Its a red flowering gum. I just posted my finished one in colour and hopefully the blending looks better now on the leaves. -

Nice changes in value! These are some of my favorite exercise, slowly working up the value.

I also tried to use the feathering technique on these leaves as hey have a similar pattern

I thought the shading was too dark on the leaf on the right (after I had taken the photo and could now see it), so I have softened those dark edges. -

This was so challenging but I am glad I took the time. I learned so much about the structure of the petal.

Feathers looking great! Sometimes really sharpen your pencils and add a subtle edging to create a bit of very thin feathery edges in an irregular way

Thanks! I love the piece of flaky peel. The highlights and folds make all the difference.

I’m in love with your garlic. The skin looks incredibly real -

I did ever so slightly darken the garlic/shallot. It gave it more form. I also made the apple rounder. Although I saw and measured my lopsided apple fairly accurately, I wanted to see if altering the shape made it look more aesthetically pleasing.
