Hi Sarah, You did a great job on this! I see the whole image and it looks excellent. Glad you like this exercise. Keep drawing other feathers and you will improve each time plus it is so much fun!

Hmmm. Well, that’s not the whole image, but perhaps Wendy and Vern are seeing the whole thing? Top and bottom are cut off on my view.

Sorry, still trying to sort out the new web site! I thought I had posted one comment with four photos, but I see this ended up being four separate photo-postings with my comment buried away somewhere else…

This makes sense! Thank you, and there seem to be some excellent darks in your set of 22 CdA pencils to experiment with!

Hi Marguerite, I was about to suggest you do some bending bars of hue and value combined and then I saw this image! Great job!!!!

HI Marguerite, this is a good exercise. Thanks for taking the time to do this. In answer to your question is there a value 9 for yellow, the answer is no! Each hue can be seen as a value, even white for example. So if your hue is not dark enough, and no pure hue will go to value 9, you need to add something to get your darks and shadows. Even a…

Liz I think this is good – I would work on the highlight on the top of the shape. It probably wouldn’t be defined.

Is the highlight to straight and stark?

I’m having trouble with adding color. I started with dark red to make the shaded areas, then added other reds and orange but ended up with a muddy mess. Should I have started with a brighter red, then added darker red for the darker areas? (I do kind of like my stem at least.)

Thanks, Wendy – are the reflected light areas too stark? And, I really spent time doing these – slowly, as you suggest, and got a lot of enjoyment out of this exercise.

Nice to see three different round forms. Yellow can be tricky, getting dark enough , but not too dark. Perhaps a bit more transition from the shadow area to the light area. On the green form and light touch of highlight would help it sparkle. Your lay down of tone is nice and delicate

Hi all – I’m practicing layering and toning. I’m wondering if my reflected light region is too bright – please advise
