I really enjoyed seeing these in the webinar. I love how they’re dancing on the page.

I love the detail on the caterpillar! Is one of the moths a female and the other male?

Fantastic Margaret! All the details and textures! So well done!!!
-
Margaret, this is just gorgeous!
-
Thank you all! The moth was found under a pile of leaves, perfectly preserved but less vibrant than when alive. I drew him from the top and underneath (flipped over) then decided to add the other two stages of his life.

You are getting some really nice smooth toning on that green acorn. And your highlight looks really nice and natural. Great job. I’m a little confused about the light source. On the green acorn, the position of your highlight makes it appear like the light is coming from the upper right, but the cast shadow makes it appear like the light is coming…[Read more]

Hi Elizabeth- you are off to a good start! Some things to consider – the top highlight needs to shift over to the left a little. I see ribbing on the subject and I would expect the highlights to be more rectangular than roundish. The bottom green section is missing the range of tones that would give it form. The left edge is too dark so that…[Read more]

Thank you Doug! I can see what you are saying!

Your color matching is wonderful, Elizabeth! Doug’s suggestions are perfect. I also wonder whether your colored pencils are sharp enough. Try keeping your colored pencils really sharp, and build your layers very lightly and slowly. This will help get nice even tone, and gradual gradations.

Funny, I was thinking about adding that I was very open to feedback and comments😊I’m here to learn. But I get what you mean by being my own critique once I’ve gone thru the lessons. From the critiques I’ve read and watched yesterday, (some past webinars) I’m getting the itch to fix my highlights from just white splotches, to more subtle shine.… -

Thank you Pam. You are correct, the lighting is from the left and yes the leaf on the right was much darker than the one on the left. I used a seed mix of different varieties of Swiss chard and the 3 here are different..

Lovely first attempt Ethel! Your colors are really nice, and I like that you marks are showing the contour of the form. This also needs more values. See if you can lift out some of those lighter values toward the left side, and middle, and then gradually get darker and darker as you tone toward the core shadow, which can be much darker than it is…[Read more]

Nice graphite study, Ethel! And I love your note about it coming from your dad’s tree. It’s a nice drawing, and there are a few places that I’d take a look at. You want to try to get at least nine values to be able to give the illusion of three dimensional form. Think about the toning a sphere exercise. To may eye, this has about 4-5 values,…[Read more]

I really love the added contrast to the middle and right leaves. Much better! I am a little confused about the light. You said it’s lit from the right, but the lighter colored leaf on the left makes it appear (to my eye) to be lit from the left. Is the leaf on the right just naturally a darker leaf?

Also, I’m not going to critique this, because I want you to o your own critique later after going through the lessons. I think that will be fun!

Deborah, nice drawing of this branch. I like how you observing some of the little knobs and imperfections on it. You are starting to get some good 3D form, with that highlight toward the left side of the branch, and then getting darker on the right. Very good! From the placement of the highlight, it looks like your light is coming from the upper…[Read more]
