Margaret, this is just gorgeous!

Thank you all! The moth was found under a pile of leaves, perfectly preserved but less vibrant than when alive. I drew him from the top and underneath (flipped over) then decided to add the other two stages of his life.

Richard, it looks like you may be trying to work too quickly. Try keeping your colored pencils very sharp, and really take your time building layers lightly and slowly. I think you’ll get smoother gradients and crisper edges that way.

You are getting some really nice smooth toning on that green acorn. And your highlight looks really nice and natural. Great job. I’m a little confused about the light source. Hi Elizabeth- you are off to a good start! Some things to consider – the top highlight needs to shift over to the left a little. I see ribbing on the subject and I would expect the highlights to be more rectangular than roundish. The bottom green section is missing the range of tones that would give it form. Your color matching is wonderful, Elizabeth! Doug’s suggestions are perfect. I also wonder whether your colored pencils are sharp enough. Try keeping your colored pencils really sharp, and build your layers very lightly and slowly. This will help get nice even tone, and gradual gradations.

Thank you Pam. You are correct, the lighting is from the left and yes the leaf on the right was much darker than the one on the left. I used a seed mix of different varieties of Swiss chard and the 3 here are different..

Lovely first attempt Ethel! Your colors are really nice, and I like that you marks are showing the contour of the form. This also needs more values. I really love the added contrast to the middle and right leaves. Much better! I am a little confused about the light. You said it’s lit from the right, but the lighter colored leaf on the left makes it appear (to my eye) to be lit from the left. Is the leaf on the right just naturally a darker leaf?

Deborah, nice drawing of this branch. I like how you observing some of the little knobs and imperfections on it.
