    • I see you have lightened the shadows since the last submission. I think that was a good move. Now think about adding some color to the shadows. I believed I mentioned indigo. Also, the reflective light could be better placed. Even though, because of ambient light and translucency of the subject, you will see a dark edge next to the cast shadow, it…[Read more]

    • Mary, this is looking great! Nice use of pattern to show the contour of the tomato. It’s working really well. Your toning is beautiful and smooth, and the leaves around the stem are wonderful. I agree with Katy about the cast shadow. I played around a bit with it in photoshop very roughly, where I added a bit more core shadow and moved the…

    • Hi Theresia, Ah, spring! My bulbs are just peeking up. I love this time of year. You have done a great job on the brown bulb. You are so good at spherical subjects! But I’d like to see some work on the greens. They seem one note. Try adding some indigo in the shadows and yellow/green in the highlights. Maybe even some browns from the bulb to tie t…[Read more]

    • Hi Kathy, thank you very much for your great advice. I like your ideas of changing the greens and roots and I‘ll simply start to draw a new bulb. These roots are so fascinating! Thanks a lot!!!

    • I just love root studies. They are so much fun. You are off to a great start. You really captured the “feel” of those roots and the way they twist and overlap and tangle. One trick that can help a bit is to take some some of the medium to larger shapes that are created by the negative space between roots, and tone that whole space a bit darker. It…[Read more]

  • Hi Sara, Loving your version of your perpetual journal. I really enjoy your text style, find it easy to read and compelling. I look at the page marked with a thoughtful beautiful illustration,,and then the text calls out to me. I think everyone here would love to know more about how you add your text to the page. Care to share that here or in one…[Read more]

  • Thanks for the feedback! The object on top of the line is a flower that was in my pile of botanical stuff. I can’t remember the name; other folks were drawing that little guy also. Yes it’s all pretty random but I agree that it would be fun to show stuff overlapping.

  • Thanks for the kind words Pam. I try really hard to make sure I am enjoying the process when I work and that I get to study the real plants up close. Then I let the plants help me plan the composition.

      • It’s impossible to look at this without feeling joy. It’s beautiful. It’s going to be fun and instructive to see what decisions you make while you are finishing this piece. It’s gorgeous as is, and I would even call it finished to my eye. One of the things that hit me when I first saw this was how your method of working lends to a very cohesive…[Read more]

      • You have a beautiful workspace Wendy, and I’d love to hear more about your new drawing board. When you mentioned how important it is to be as comfortable as possible when you work, it made me laugh because I’m currently working in my bathtub while trying to social feral kittens that we are keeping in our bathroom. &#x…

      • I really like the analogous colors in this composition, it has a vibrant, yet calming feeling to it. You are doing a nice job of showing how those petals bend and curl, and you are using your dark colors to nicely show how the centers of those flower dip down into that long tube formed by the bottoms of the petals. The flower on the upper right…[Read more]

      • All of these pages of yours are making me want to visit Hawaii and learn about these fantastic plants. I like your spiral within a spiral. I feel like your composition is hypnotic. These are all nicely rendered. There is something about the quality of that brain fruit that just adore. Great work.

      • Another fun page, Dolores. I love the bright colors together with the more muted colors, and the variety of subjects. I really like the way that leaf is giving the flower a hug. There is one spot where I’d like to understand what’s going on a bit more. There is a subject that is touching the top of the lime, and I’m not sure what it is. It looks…[Read more]

      • Dolores, thanks for sharing your work from Hawaii. I’m excited to see what you all were working on while there. I love this warm up page. I especially like the branch. You are showing nice perspective. The front of the branch comes out toward the viewer nicely – good use of size and detail to show that. The highlights and the shadows are also…[Read more]

      • I think if you are going to make time to fit something into your schedule, drawing time is the best! So, it’s great that your perpetual journal is what you are focusing on. Drawing is what makes or breaks a botanical piece. If you don’t get the drawing correct, there is nothing you can do with color to make it better. Getting that practice in will…[Read more]

          • Welcome home Wendy! Glad you’re back safe and sound and with a new drawing board. Pam – thank you for the great laugh. I have the fantasy that everyone is working from a perfectly fabulous studio and you brought me down to earth.

          • Actually the pattern was very subtle and I can see that I didn’t do I good job at displaying it. The yellow was much paler too which I find difficult to reproduce as I mentioned . above. Thank you Pam.

          • Thank you Pam!

              • Thanks for your encouragement Pam!
Some weeks my perpetual journal is the only drawing I do. I’ve love the discipline of it. I did miss one week in June of 2021. I think I’m like many people who like to draw plants; I like to grow plants too. The height of the gardening season competes for drawing time. And just when there are so many luscious…[Read more]
