Nice toning, Sharon! Strange to have the light coming from below. I’m assuming this should be rotated? I think you could be more careful the shadow side. If you have Wendy’s The Joy of Botanical Drawing, check out pages 43-45. She has great instruction on shadows. In general, think about the light source. How is the light landing on the sphere? W…[Read more]

Hi Sharon, Nice toning bars. I love the star punches! And the value steps on that one are very good. On the right two scales, the values on the dark side are pretty good, but I see a drop off between step 7 and 8. I’d just extend your scale a few more steps to fit in all the values you’re missing.

Hi Cathie, First of all the changes you have made are heading in the right direction. That sit down shadow is really working. Good job! As for the cast shadow and reflective light. If you have Wendy’s The Joy of Botanical Drawing, check out pages 43-45. She has great instruction on these aspects! In general, think about the light source. How is t…[Read more]

Hi Cassandra, I know the problem. Your brain just doesn’t want to see them so crunched. Extra careful measurement and making use of the highlight and shadow aspects helps.

Hi Jill, I knew it was only a matter a time before you did a real carbunclely squash! I’ve been looking forward to seeing it! This is great! I love the curly stem and splotches of green. I’ve done a few myself. I find it so much fun creating that funky surface. And those orange and yellows make me happy!

Fantastic Jill! You do such a masterful job toning your subject for form, but still retain your colors and details.

so amazing

Incredible work, love this!

Lovely Jill. With tiny strokes you are able to portray all those wonderful bumps and blemishes into a thing of beauty.

Good exercise page. Nice to see you more on to the cylinder shape! Watch out for those vertical stripes. You want that toning to be seamless!
-
Sharon, This is beautiful! So well toned. You’re showing a real sensitive touch. Great job! You could even bring those texture lines more into the highlight area. Just be careful to keep them light and reflect what is happening with the light source.

Ah, the more complete version! Again, check out pages 43-45 in The Joy of Botanical Drawing. Think about the light source. How is the light landing on the sphere? How is the light blocked by the sphere? How is the light bouncing back from the table and reflecting on the backside of the sphere?
-
Hi Katy, Yes it should have been rotated. I have just checked out pages 43-45 and gone back to the lesson video and will keep practicing. Thank you for your quality feedback.

Yes that meakes sense, although I think in reality the sepals were lighter, but to emphasize them I will make them darker. sometimes we have to draw what we know not what we see. Same with the reflections. Thanks for your comments.
