Still working on these but I’m not sure how to do the half shell that is empty. I tried to draw it flat but had to erase. I used earth green to shadow the other beans but think it was too light. Any suggestions? Think I’ll do some leaves and vines around the edge and in the corner.

Great to meet you in the workshop Susan – you really got the feel of these different veggies – the bumpiness of the cuke, and the squiggly line edges of its cross sections, then the smooth and shininess/moisture of the tomatoes. Way to go! Great observation.

Ha! Patience patience patience, right? Just keep Wendy’s voice/comments in your head and think about the overall form of the whole large flower head and don’t forget your highlights and focal points. I am here encouraging you! It’s a big deal to take on complicated projects. Way to go.

I agree with Doug, such a great papery feel 🙂 and great composition – really captured the true feel of this plant

Doug, thanks! I’m having fun playing with the Kraft paper. Is there a better side to use? I’m not quite sure.

Progress of sorts. I was remembering Pam’s comment, ‘there’s always an ugly stage!’. And to try to get beyond wanting to rip it up!!

Your flower is beautiful. I love the purple! I like the shape, also. Thanks for posting your unfinished left-side leaf. Interesting to see how you are doing the toning. Is that watercolor and if so, will you go over it w/colored pencil?
-
Thanks so much everyone for the encouragement! Much appreciated! It’s been a bit of a challenging relationship with this flower! Laura, re: the material. I’m not using watercolor, just coloured pencils, which is why I think it’s driving me spare. It might be easier with watercolour pencils? I’ve never worked with them and I guess they would give a…[Read more]

Thank you, Laura. I love that you see it as peaceful. Maybe it is the horizontal format and muted hues of the subject. Those seedpods have done their job. Now they can lay down and relax.

Hi Katy, I am new too – still on the leaf lessons. I just love to look at your painting. The shadows are really lovely! It’s a very peaceful study.

If I were to redo this, I would have rearranged the flowers and buds a bit, but it’s all part of the learning process😀 -
